power supply or something is shorted triggering it in self protection to turn off.have a shop look at it.

Get your service manual here: Yamaha RX V870 Manuals FIRST be SURE your speakers are connected! A loose wire can cause shutdowns as your Supply tries to protect your output transistors! Your Yamaha also HAS a onboard DIAGNOSTIC feature but it won't do you much good now because your supply is going into emergency shutdown so quickly... see page 15. Suspect a problem in your Power Supply. *** WITH THE POWER DISCONNECTED *** Inspect the electrolytic caps for leakage AND be sure the tops are flat and not bubbled. Find your power supply on pages 46/47/48. It is VERY extensive and has MANY possible suspects. NOT for the weak of heart! Anthony

Separate your speaker ground wires and ground them independently. Make sure you are grounding the speaker ground and not the positive!

NEVER USE MAXIMUM VOLUME FOR TROUBLESHOOTING.

Turn the volume control to something medium.

The errant switch, control or condition may change and you will suddenly release the amp's
full power and possibly destroying your speakers. If a signal isn't audible at 1/2 volume
it's probably not there.

Carefully examine the front panel for clues like a misplaced Source Selection, Mute, Tape
Monitor control or Multichannel Analog Input selected.

There is a good chance that a common control may have developed a high-resistance or 'dead'
spot through defect or idleness and is causing your symptom. Turn the POWER OFF and operate
every control throughout its range a number of times, especially rarely-used ones like Tape
Monitors and the Mute control.

Turn the volume to something reasonable and see if that helped.

hi i have the same problem. yamaha rx-v870 with a remote control that works perfectly except for the volume up/down. i pressed the buttons for a minute and applied some lemon gunk remover liquid and this helped for a very short period. i am wondering if the problem is with the little motor inside the receiver that rotates the volume knob itself, as opposed to an infrared problem on the transmitter/receiver.

i have a same problem, but on a rx-v1070, worked fine for a long time and one day i just turned it on and boom light blinking and no sound, if i crank the volume to about 80-90% i get distorted sound, i think our amps are gone, checked the fuses and they seem ok. Most likely its the amp. This unit was around $1200 back in a day. And it still produces sounds better then many recievers in stores today, too bad it has no 5.1ch surround.anybody have a solution pls let me know, for now i have a weak pioneer with 5.1 but no power.

I replaced it with a 6V lamp. Radio Shack part# 272-1140. It cost $1.49.

Does it turn on? or does it "click" then a second later, "click" again? First thing to look at would be the internal fuse. Pull the top off the unit and check the fuse, it's located right near the AC input. If the fuse is ok, it needs serviced, if it's bad, you can find a replacement at radio shack. Hope this helps. Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Hi, This sounds like a feed back problem due to a bad ground somewhere. I would suggest checking the "R.C.A. " plugs at the D.V.D. player and at the receiver end. If these are partially inserted this could account for the humming. Also try using known to be good cables for hookup, you may have an open ground in the other cords. In your case it is obviously not heat, speaker load or excessive volume at the moment. You could unplug it then turn it upside down and shake it to see if something metallic is rattling around inside it. Maybe open it up and sniff for burnt components, but even if you see something obvious and replace it you migh not know what the original cause for failure was, so you may just be wasting time and sacrificing new parts.
