Old receiver won't work with new HD TV
This looks like a great receiver for its day. I think you can keep it in service until you get into SACD, DTS or some of the other nearly obsolete but awesome audio formats that exist.
Most people use modern AC receivers to also manage video switching between multiple digital video/audio sources such as HDTV and Blu-Ray. Personally, I run mine with the videos going straight to different inputs on my TV and the audios going into different inputs on my receiver. Yes, I have to switch two things whenever I switch video sources. Life could be MUCH worse!
In actuality, there is little real need to have the TV attached to the receiver for much more than a basic video output, which this unit has, so you can observe its On Screen Displays, mostly for setup.
To address your unit and modern TV's... your limitation appears to be that it does not have an HDMI port or two for those possible hi-end AV inputs that you have not mentioned owning. If you do have them you'll actually have to do like I do and think a moment when changing video sources. The horror! As I said above, I would not consider that a show-stopper. The three digital audio inputs (two coaxial and one optical) might be plenty and of the right types for your equipment mix, but there are no 5.1 analog ins or outs for the real high-end audio formats, but you may never want nor encounter them. You can probably live without 5.1 analog.
Without knowing more about the TV in question it's hard to answer what the Best Buy guy told you. If the TV has a standard S-video or composite video input this receiver will work with it for basic video and your other HD/DVD sources can fight for whatever inputs the TV has available.
Best Buy would probably like to sell you a new receiver but I think you'll keep this one online for awhile.
Wont turn on
if it is old or has been used a lot, it has probably broken down or blown a fuse, i would check the fuse, if thats intact then it is most likely an internal problem.
Volume not playing
I would guess that the blinking vol lite is indicating "protect" mode. This is a case where the amp section is shutdown to prevent further damage as a problem has been found. This is usually because the amp transistors have failed. Expect $25-$35 in parts plus the local labor rate.

Can you fix the volume button on the remote
No, it's a rubber membrane under the button and rubber "bubble pad" check ebay for replacement, not too expensive. If you need a "system control" remote, look at the Harmony Logitech series. The 620 is around 100 and the 610 is around 70. Great remotes and "Easy" to program. Hope this helps
Yamaha PSR 600 - How to Open for Repairs
This is an answer to a message left almost 2 years ago.
There are:
24 brass screws about 1/2" long.
3 brass screws about 1" long and
2 black screws about 1" long
In all, 29 screws to remove. The case should come off easily. Be careful not to disconnect wires when lifting back from instrument.
Yamaha RX-V992 won't stay on. Starts for a second then shuts off.
Sounds like one of a few things. There is an auto protect feature in most amps and they kick on when one of the following happens. This is assuming that the speakers are plugged in when the problem happens. If not, the power supply is shot or some other non user serviceable problem is happening with the amp.
A. Speakers are out of phase B.The Speakers are way to large for the system C.There is a short in one of the speaker lines. D.The speakers are blown or shorted. E. Last but not least, the power supply for the amp is going, going gone. It could also have gotten some moisture.
Not to be redundant but try some of this. Take a new speaker wire, not the old.
1.Check the phase. For all speakers. Make it the same all the way around,
+red or white stripe, to the red terminal and -black or non striped to the black or negative at the amp and speakers.
2. Start with all speakers unplugged and plug just the right front in. Test it.
If it works ok, then plug in the second speaker, again by itself. Test it.
on and on. By process of elimination, you should be able to isolate the problem. That is of course, if it has anything to do with the speakers.
Volume light blinking, no sound.
Plug in some headphones as they are usually always active and see if you get any sound and volume control of them.
if not the switches may be stuck .
or the output fuses blown.
it gets sticky to work inside one of these without electronics experience and you can do more damage.
The fuses are about all you are allowed to fix.
Receiver shuts off at times
There is some leakage of DC voltage getting to the output section. DC voltage will cause the protection circuit to kick in and shut down the amp. This should be a relatively simple repair and cost about $15-$30 in parts plus the local labor rate.

The receiver sound shuts off
There is a problem with the receiver that is allowing DC voltage to get to the output amp section. This is detected and the protection circuit shuts down the receiver. Yamaha uses coupling capacitors between sections to prevent this. If one of these is defective, it would explain your symptom. This should be a relatively simple repair for a repair shop. Expect $10-$25 for parts plus the local labor rate.
