Yamaha HTR-5660 Power Problems
i talked to my father in law who knows quite a bit about these. your only option is replacement. i wish i had better news. i know what they cost and i have one as well.
Why does it turn on, then off right away?
There will be a circuit protection system activating. You switch it and an overload condition develops so it turns off to prevent damage getting worse. The overload could be cause by faulty or touching speaker wires. Removing these might stop it. Another cause is faulty or shorted transistor or other device in the power amp section.
Is yamaha ampli rip off ?
I have not personnally had any problems with any yamaha recievers, or surround processors that I have ever purchased, and they continue to operate these decades later. The fact that they have pre-amp outputs for all channels was a major determining factor, as I could then use other amps with more power for expansion. make sure you have a surge protector for your ac power supply, that has been the biggest source of problems with any piece of a/v equipment
When watching cable tv we are not getting any
Your best bet is to hook all your video components directly to TV, using your TV's menu to choose what you want to watch, and then hooking reciever to TV via digital optical out from TV to digital optical in on reciever. From what I read, your reciever has 6 digital optical inputs. Anyway, try running, at least, your cable box to TV, best by HDMI, the run digital optical out to reciever. Make sure you go throught he recievers menu to make sure you have he right channel selected for audio.
Tanaka htr 5660 was working
You must have hit the DIRECT button . In this mode it produces pure stereo sound by shutting down the multichannel Digital Sound Processor (DSP). Only your front Left & Right speakers will work
Connect a monitor to a yahama HTR 5660 receiver
"trying to connect multiple devices to a yamaha receiver if I am using an S video to connect the tv (monitor) to the receiver do I plug it into the monitor OUT s video or would it be Input not output?" Input on the Monitor from Video Out on the Yamaha.
"if I am only using the monitor for video and not sound do I still need to plug in the audio cords or do i leave them out " - Presumably the monitor doesn't have speakers or audio connections, so it's a non-issue. Your video sources should have audio routed to the receiver. If the monitor has speakers I would also send 2-channel analog audio to it from, say, the cable/satellite box, so you could hear the weather or other lo-fi video without turning on the Yamaha.
It powers on then it shuts off in 3 secs
Going into "protect mode", check for blown speakers or shorted speaker wires, sometimes even a source can be a problem(DVD,CD PLAYER,TAPE DECK,ETC.)
There is an electrical short present in your system somewhere, it can be the receiver has an internal short.
Disconnect all sources and speaker wires from the back of the receiver, then see if it still goes into "protect mode", if it does, then there is an internal short in receiver, if it doesn't, then one of the sources or the speakers or speaker wires may be the problem!
Goosd Luck !
YAMAHA HTR 5660 MAKES POPING SOUND WITH LOUD NOISE AND BRIGHT LIGHT
Looks like you've got the best connection available - initially I thought it might have something to do with decoding the prologic signal from the analog input, but obviously not! And since you've got the audio separate from the video it is unlikely there is any interference from the video signal in the cable. Have you tried a different DVD player (I reckon that is most likely)? Also try connecting the video signal DIRECTLY from DVD to the TV if you aren't already doing so (you are anyway aren't you - the HTR 5660 doesn't have HDMI out does it?) Finally, if you have some spare cables around, try changing them - see if you get the same response when using component video cable instead of HDMI.
