Please clarify this statement: "...when i hook up just red/white audio..". Is that for only the one external source or all?
It's not clear if you tried the red and white cable swap at BOTH ends to isolate the signal loss to the source or the receiver.
The TV's audio controls determine how loud and in what format its audio exits on the RCA cables.
WHY do you need audio from the TV in the first place. If its programming originates at a Cable BOX THAT would be the best place to use as the audio source - and digitally to boot.
Digital sources must be assigned in the receiver setup. It's in the manual.
When i turn up my
What are the impedances? Shorter/longer wire (within reason) doesn't matter.
Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on; or it may turn on but produce no audio to the speakers.
Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.
You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.
If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.
If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'nekkid'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Connect the dish directly to the tv - if the image appears correctly then the Yamaha control processor is stuck in a loop.
The only thing you can do is to perform a full reset: with the unit in stand-by mode hold down STRAIGHT/EFFECT button in the front panel and press the STANDBY/ON button - the Advanced menu will appear on the display; select Preset by rotating the PROGRAM button; press the STRAIGHT/EFFECT button till Reset appears - press STANDBY/ON to activate it; if the procedure was successful the unit will power off . Now power it on and everything should work as it should. If this isn't the case then the processor itself is defective. Unfortunately this means that the receiver is dead - to fix it you will have to replace the control board and that would cost more than a new unit.

The volume keys should be working by default, but you may have volume punch through turned on (meaning the remote is sending signals for TV or CABLE volume function no matter what mode you are actually on). To unlock volume control for AUX mode, do the following:

2. Press and hold SETUP until the remote blinks twice
3. Type 993
4. Press and release VOL-
The remote should blink four times to confirm unlock.

Hi
Thanks for using FixYa. Please check that all the batteries of remote are fully
charged. If not then charge and place them properly in the remote. The remote will
start working and you’ll need to reset the unit to factory default. Put the
unit in standby mode, hold down Straight (Effect) button on the front panel and press Standby/On
button – the Advanced Setup menu appears in the front panel display. Now rotate
program to move through the menu and select the ‘Preset’. Press Straight (Effect)
to select desired setting. Press Standby/On to confirm the selection made by
you and press Reset and the unit will be reset to its factory default.
Please do
accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further
assistance.
Thanks

Sometimes volume controls are held on by an Allen type screw, which can become loose, allowing it to fall off. You should see a hole in the knob if it is. You might need a long thin Allen Key to get it back on.
Otherwise have checked my spares guide (though it's a few years old) and it seems Yamaha might only do their own spares.
