A common problem is that the switch contacts on the headphone jack that send the audio to the speaker when headphones are unplugged go bad. Some of these are so low quality that after a few times of inserting a plug the contacts no longer make. If you can access the jack, you might find a jack similar to:

What happens is the spring tension on the tabs over the top of this that contact the leads to the speaker lose tension and no longer press hard enough on the contacts to make contact. Try to open your unit and see if it has this kind of jack... Frankly, these jacks are JUNK and a chronic problem.

I suspect there is bad soldering on the circuit board in the vicinity of that button. The movement causes the connection to re-establish. It isn't necessarily one of the button leads. Look for a little grey line around the menicus of one of the soldered leads.

Several of my music programs seem to have a limit of around 2Gb for a track... this is inspite of having plenty of disk space... this seems to be a limit set by the program rather than the resources available.

The most likely case is that one of the main output transistors (if which there are many) is shorted. When the protect circuit senses DC on the final output, it will not allow the output relay to come on to protect the speakers from raw DC. With the power removed, you can check between each outputs Emitter and Collector and you will probably find close to zero ohms. From that point you need to unsolder each of the pins of the bad channel until you find the shorted device(s) and replace them.
