1) Put black tape over photoelectric eye on timer.
Photo-eye is small round eyeball that bulges out.
See of lights stay on.

2) Turn timer away from source of light so photoelectric eye does not pick up feedback from lights.

It sounds like photo eye is receiving enough light that it turns off, 'thinking' it's dawn.
And then when lights are off, photo eye 'thinks' it's dark again, so lights come back on.

I am very interesting to identify your timer.
If you have outdoor timer, then timer photoeye can be getting feedback from surrounding lights.
If you have indoor hardwire timer, then white and red wires are probably connected incorrectly.

I think this switch is set to go on at dark, then you can set how many hours after it goes on you want it go off. If you want the device to go on at dark and run for 2 hours, you stop at 2.

1) If your trippers are worn down, the timer will not turn on and off
Google search for X2772 trippers.
2) If your timer dial is not rotating, then timer clock motor is bad.

3) According to e-mail I received from Paragon Nov 2010, Paragon is no longer making timers and parts, except for their line of defrost timers.
4004-71 is not a defrost timer, so it is no longer being made according to Paragon representative.

4) To change timer brands: Intermatic cross reference shows Paragon 4004-71 can be replaced with Intermatic T-104 timer.

If you look on the back, you will find the instructions engraved in it. You will need good eyesight. Is it the one with the photocell for Christmas lights? Plug it in, press the button once for set, press again until you reach the number of hours (say 6) after dark you want it it on. Take note that when you set it, the light will be on.
