Stihl 16" Chainsaw Bar Chain Saw 018 025 Ms 180 250 Questions & Answers
I have a Stihl 16" 012 AVT chainsaw. I cannot get
First thing I would try is wash out the oil tank with a little bit of diesel fuel then run some thinner oil thru it to see if it gets better . I usually leave bar and chain off when I do this.. or if it is oiling but not going down the bar check the bar oil holes.

Chain does not move on the ms170 stihl chainsaw
I assume you have the correct chain for the bar and that the sprocket on the end of the chain bar goes around. Check the bar for any defects like pinches where the bar has been caught. Check the chain drive cogs for any burs on the edges - often happens if the chain has been run too slack and then come off!
Check the chain drive teeth thickness which should be the same as the chain bar can accept. Check also you have the right pitch chain for the drive teeth on the clutch sprocket. Assuming the chain brake is not on then you should be able to move the chain around the bar when all the slack has been taken out. If the chain and bar checks are all ok then there is a problem with the clutch. With the chain brake off the clutch with the chain drive sprocket on should spin reasonably freely. If not then you need to remove the 'E' shaped circlip in the centre of the clutch drum , remove the washer behind it and slide off the clutch drum. Then remove the roller bearing and be prepared to replace it if it will not run freely. Clean out all the muck in the clutch housing and check for anything obviously broken. If all appears ok then put a few drops of 2 stroke oil on the roller bearing and replace it on the shaft. Clean the clutch drum and replace it on the shaft. Then the washer and 'E' clip and re-fit the bar and chain. Re-fit the cover and tension the chain and try again. If that does not do it then there has to be a problem with the chain bar.

Is there a gasket between motor an carb there is a neapreen inlay where it bolts on
The rubber inlet manifold fits onto the cylinder but inside the rubber is a small 'pipe' that must fit into the small hole on the cylinder block otherwise there will not be sufficient vacuum created as the piston rises to drive the diaphragm in the carb. It is easier to fit the inlet manifold rubber to the cylinder before putting it back into the housing. Between the carb and the inlet manifold is a thin plastic 'gasket' with a small pipe. That pipe fits into the vacuum hole on the inlet manifold. Often when the machine is dismantled the inlet manifold will not go back right - it will either be less flexible or gone hard over the years so a replacement is necessary. The Stihl part is expensive but aftermarket ones are available.

Chain file sharpening size
For the normal size chain you use a 5.2mm round file. Smaller chains for top handles take a 4mm round file.

Switch wont go to off 180sthil
The switch is really a fairly simple concept that simply moves a strip of metal away from a contact or allows it to connect to a contact to make or break the ignition circuit. Remove the filter cover and look closely at the formed plastic shape of the switch and look for the strip of springy metal that is moved with the movement of the switch, then you'll see what is binding it up. The springy metal probably has gotten out of alignment and is binding up the switches movement.
Of course it may even be as simple as a bunch of crud stuck in there inhibiting the switches movement.
