If you press the new button and it doesn't start a new file it is possible that the little microswitch is broken from the circuit board. I have repaired about 10 of these on ds-4000's If you have patience and can use a soldering iron it is possible for you to repair it yourself. You have to take the back cover off first and then the front cover. Then you can take the function knob off. All of these come off with removing little screws,from each assembly. This will get you to the switch and you can look at it to see if it is broken from the circuit board. If it is broken from the board(usually 1 leg of the switch ) you can resolder it to the circuit path. All you need is a small needle point soldering iron and some thin solder. You may find these at a Radio Shack near you. Or You can also sedt it to Smoltz business products they repair these models. I do not know what they charge but they are very good at repairing these units

do you have programs files (86) in your PC "C" drive menu menu? If yes that;s where yiou should install the software. That's because it;'s a 32 bit on a 64 bit.

The DS4000 has a lock option available from the menu. press the menu and scroll untill you find lock. If you did not prposely lock the file, most likely the files on the memory card are corrupt. You will need to reformat the memory. The format option is in the menu as well.

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

The lock function can be found in the menu, however if you did not go there to lock the files, chances are your memory is corrupted. You can reformat the memory from the menu but this will wipe out any recordings. If you need to recover the files, try PC Inspector, Smart recovery. This is a free download, just search google.

Olympus uses a Device detector utility to detect the recorder. Some other applications can keep the recorder from being detected. Check for Adobe Download manager running in the tray. If it is, disable and it may work. Some printer controle managers also can cause this not to work.

Also, check if the recorder is listed as a removable drive under My Computer.

You need to erase some files. If there are no files, the memory may be corrupted. From the menu go to sub menu, then format. This will clear the memory.

There is a free file recovery program available that has been very sucessfull for me. After recovering your files, be sure to reformat the memory. Go to menu, sub menu, format.

If you're encountering a memory error, it is often caused by the battery pack. Battery packs included with the DS-4000 are rechargeable battery packs. This problem is likely to happen on the DS-4000 when a NEW battery pack is being used. The battery pack out of the box does not hold enough charge to power up the recorder through its initial start-up procedure.

1. Please turn off the recorder.

2. Remove the battery pack and memory card for 20 seconds.

3. Install the memory card in the card slot.

4. Install new AAA batteries before you turn ON the DS-4000.

5. Your battery pack may also not be fully charged. All new battery packs must be fully charged from 2.5 to 3 hours before first time use.

6. For the first week to 10 days of use, it is recommended to recharge the battery pack as often as possible. This will exercise it and improve its charge-hold capacity.

The DS-4000 is supported by Windows 98®, Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, and Windows Vista™. The DS-4000 is not compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista™. Windows 98SE or later is required for voice-recognition support and to use the DS-4000 as a USB microphone/speaker. DSS Player Pro version 4.9.4 or later is required for compatibility with Windows Vista.

The DS-4000 is supported on Macintosh™ computers by Mac™ OS X version 10.1 and later. The DSS Player for Mac software does not support voice-recognition software. DSS Player for Mac must be updated to version 6.2.0 or later for compatibility with Intel-based Mac servers and clients.

After reading the above, you will discover that your Olympus DS-4000 is not compatible with Win 7.

So, you will be needing another operating system distinct from win 7 to be able to use your DS-4000 with computer.

OFF: unlocks the file and alows to be edit or erase 5 press the Menu button to select the option. Press and hold the MENU button for 1 second or longer to close the Menu.

With the handheld off:
1 Power the unit on. It will greet the user.
2 Press the menu key.
3 Press rew to get to sub menu
4 Press rew to get to LOCK and press menu
5 Switch the cursor to OFF and press menu
6 Press Menu at all the exit prompts to return to the main screen
