My Nikon d5200 won't focus and when I try get it
Ri: It is almost certainly not a problem with the camera, most likely with the lens. Before you can look for a solution you must figure out what is causing the problem. If you only own the (1) lens you need to get access to another fairly new Nikon camera body & lens (whether from friends or just take your camera and lens to a local camera store)!!!!If you go to a store, don't initially waste your time to try to explain the problem to the counter staff. Ask to see another Nikon camera and lens..., then when this is provided, put their lens on your body..., if it works properly with out squealing this is great news (it's the lens not the camera)...., but make sure, just in case!!!! Put your lens on their body..., if it squeals and doesn't work properly you have now positively identified where the problem is located!!NOTE: IN MOST CASES IT IS THE LENS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE LENS IS THE 'KIT' LENS!!!If it is determined that the problem is the lens, how should you deal with it? First off..., is the camera and lens still inside the warranty period? If it is still inside the time frame..., you need to determine if the problem will covered by warranty. This is essential..., (the 18-55mm lens is not an overly expensive lens) as if you decide to send the lens off for warranty service and it is determined by the service station that the problem was 'user error' you will be stuck with shipping costs to and from supplier plus any parts and labour costs..., and if you say no to the repair you still are on the hook for an estimate fee!!!! (sorry for the doom & gloom)!!Avoid all this hassle..., in most cases this issue is caused by misalignment in the lens...., easy way to determine if this is the case!!! Place the lens (front element down) onto a smooth flat surface (remove caps, hoods & filters), then take a accurate ruler and measure from surface to the back of the lens mount!!! Take this measurement at several points around the lenses circumference. If all measurements are the same it's an internal problem and most likely covered by warranty. If you are getting different measurements..., then you will be told the lens has received an impact, don't waste your time or money trying to get it fixed..., you can buy one of these lenses used for $50.00 to 75.00 CDN. Cheaper that what the repair and shipping cost will be!!Hope this helpsPeter
