Onkyo TX-DS797 Receiver Questions & Answers
Hi I have a Onkyo
The DSP Board is one possible fault but it could also be due to failing capacitors on the preamp board that are used for muting the sound signal.
Do you hear a click when you trun it on and have you tried the speaker setup test signal?.
Another thing you need to try is connecting a set of headphone as there's a switch inside the headphone socket which mutes the speakers. You may need to go into the setup menu to adjust the headphone volume level if you haven't used them before.

If you can get back to me with the results when you've tried the above we can work from their.
I have an Onkyo TX-DS797 it is about 6 yrs old
These units *(if I remember correctly) had a problem with a memory IC in the surround porcessing section that would show up initially as popping and would eventually end up with no sound at all. This is a straightforward repair that involves replacing the IC with a new one (different manufacturer). The problem is that this is a surface mounted IC and is difficult to replace without damaging the underlying PC board. This is NOT a DYI repair. Have this unit checked by an authorized Onkyo service center.

Onkyo digital reciever has poping noise when in dolby sound
I have the same reciever, and had the same problem. Contact Onkyo, this is a known issue where defective DSP chips were used and manifest problems with a popping / clicking sound when using surround settings. These receivers also have a Dolby Digital input issue that can cause audio dropouts when watching cable or SAT broadcasts that encode DD using a 'newer' broadcast encoding methods. Onkyo is covering the cost of that repair for me now, even though the receiver is 5 years old now....
Onkyo TX DS797 no sound from cable TV
Have you made sure the receiver's INPUT SELECTOR is set to "Video 2"? I know it seems like a stupid question, but worth mentioning as many folks would set the receiver on TV, which would not work unless the signal was also plugged into a "TV input" in back of the receiver. If your setting is correct, try running the TV cable sound temporarily into the receiver's DVD input, which we know does work. If you still don't get cable TV sound when the receiver is set to "DVD", then you have a problem with the TV cable audio portion. Most receivers would fail completely, rather than have only one input fail, so my guess is that there is a hookup or switching error somewhere.
Tape loop
You may need to purchase a cheap external mixer with both mic and line inputs, and use that to mix the mic with the DVD audio. In most receivers, you can only select one input at a time. The output of the mixer can then be plugged into any spare receiver input, such as AUX, CD, DVD, etc. When not using Karaoke, you can simply turn the mic input down to prevent it from interfering with the DVD signal, but will still need to have the mixer on to hear DVD's.
No sound
possible problem will be on the speaker relay ckt. as discussed in onkyo's service bulletin.
"When the speaker relays are activated, the collector of Q231 and Q232 should drop to
near 0Vdc. Voltage can be monitored at terminal P6830 and P6832. Q231 supports
RL6600, RL6602 and RL6603, where as Q232 supports RL6605 for Zone 2 operation.
If the DVC at P6830 collector or its follower terminal is HIGH, it should be an open
transistor Q231."
0-83 error on onkyo tx nr 555
The 0-83 error indicates a problem with the firmware update.
Try resetting the receiver's BIOS by following these steps2:
Unplug all cables
Un-Power the receiver
Power the receiver
Before the receiver gets into the "Enter for updating" message, press Tone + CBL/SAT + ON/STANDBY. This will show you either the volume numbers or get you into settings of the receiver's speaker configuration.
Press CBL/SAT + ON/STANDBY. This will clear the BIOS and show a "Clear" message on the display. Wait until you hear a couple of clicking sounds for the receiver to turn on and off the power.
