Onkyo TX-SR601 Receiver - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
Onkyo HT-R510
have you tried to reset it to factory defaults yet? If it has a vcr button on the front, then hold the vcr button and press power...it should say reset on the front. Might not help, but worth a try.
Onkyo sr600 memory problem
I had the same problem with my TX-SR601 receiver. Solution: I changed the
capacitor C766 (100uF/6,3V) on the "DSP and main microprocessor" or "U1" board. This
capacitor is responsible to keep the settings in the memory. It is directly
next to the SRAM ICs (Q705-706) (type: CY7C1019BV/CV33-15VCT).
Now the receiver works properly again.
Onkyo TX SR-601. Everything
Hello there, if you have switched speaker wires and yet they still dont work then the problem most definitely needs a repair to be carried out. Although as long as the entire unit functions and its just the right speakers that dont work in zone 2 then the problem is minor and would not need a total replacement.Although the problem would need to be looked at to be able to determine the exact source of the failure but usually is a fairly meager anomaly in the system and can be easily fixed.
Hope this support has been helpful?

Your Onkyo has no suitable input for turntable. I suggest you to use
this or
this preapmlifie, connect the turntable at the preamplifier input andthe preamplifier output at any available input at the Onkyo (cd, tapein or video in, at the red and white connectors). Of course you can buy any phono preamplifier from any shop and connect it with the same procedure. The models before is just a sugestion.

Do you have the manual?

Randomly lost the the ability to produce sound is what you mean. It already does produce sound randomly.
You don't mention any conditions common to the onset or say if it cicks prior to going silent, which would indicate an activation of the self-protection circuit.
Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.
Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.
You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.
If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.
If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.
Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as another possible root cause for intermittent shutdown.

Hi,
Since you already have service manual so please check page-25 schematics of U21 board and test Transformer T902, its standby power transformer that provides 13V supply to receiver at connector P931A and T902 would be open/ defective so no output volts for standby circuits and result is dead unit.
Below is as image of U21 schematics for better idea.
Hope this will help.
Thanks.

If your satellite box is connected using a digital cable to the 601 receiver you won't get any sound through zone 2.Zone 2 can process only analogue sound ( inputs ).

It means the receiver senses excessive heat, or a short at its outputs. Disconnect the speaker wires and see if that helps. If not, get it to a Tech. If it turns on, figure out which speaker path(s) was causing the problem and resolve it.

Since you are already using cd and tape inputs you can use the audio part of any video input (I think that this amplifier doesn't mute the signal in case of no video input). Since your i-pod is a portable device it's a good idea to use the front panel (video 4 input) audio connectors.

Onkyo tx-sr601 bi wire with zone 2
SMCCARTY,
The idea behind bi-wiring speakers is to get the highest quality of sound by getting the sound from two separate sources doing separate jobs. Lower frequencies are harder for an amplifier to produce than higher frequencies. So it is common to give these frequencies to two different amplifiers so each can produce the highest quality of sound. By removing the low end from the top end amplifier, it provides the top end amp more headroom thus reducing the chances of clipping. Clipping can easily be heard from the tweeters destoying not only the sound but your speakers as well. It is common practice in pro and car audio to use separate amps for subbass, low, mid and high; four amps working together to their corresponding drivers (more or less depending on the system and type of audio being produced).
In your case, getting the two different sources from basically the same amp (power supply), would not accomplish the full intent of bi-wiring; it would just make more wiring for the same end result. However still a good thought on your end. Onkyo receivers are great because of their beefy power supplies. Not very many other brands have such strong power supplies. Denon's are close but not equal.

More watts needed
Add another power amp to line outs from your main amp to your speakers this will give more power(current) to your main speakers as you have decreased load on main amp
