Mix water and baking soda together until baking soda is dissolved. Take a small baking pan or a bowel with a flat bottom and place the lantern in a vertical position, bottom down and slowly pour in the baking soda solution so the solution is 1/4" above the battery lid so the solution can soak into the threads of the lid. Let sit overnight. Next morning, slowly lift the lantern out of the solution without tipping it keeping it vertical, and slowly unscrew the lid over the sink.
