I have ESAM5500 and it shows General Alram. Even if I turn off and on the General alram pops up first. The other key is not functioning. I do not know how to make the reset of memory. So, I just make short circircuit of internal backup battery on control board. (The main power must be discunnected before disassembl)
It sounds to me like you may have a clog in your generator or coffee boiler. It sits directly on top of the unit under your stainless steel plate. There is valving and tubing set up in it and they do tend to clog up over time from either scale or coffee grinds.

have you tried cleaning it as described in your user manual,, can you hit the button for regular grind? there are alternatives, a coffee grinder if failry cheap at 10 dollars US,,
The machine understant that there is not any beans in the container by the mesuring how easily the grinder motor rotates. If there is not any beans in the grinder motor rotates freely. In your case means that the beans from container are blocked to enter down to the grinders disk plates or they partialt enter, so the motor runs more freely and machine understant that there ae not enough beens. So you need to remove the beans and container and by the use of a vaccum cleaner remove all remainings from the grinders entrance and funel. You can also use a brush to remove any coffe oils and remianing so the bean can easily slide inside the grinder.
With any coffee grinder (especially those that are used for espresso) the burrs can wear down after a while. It seems like you've used this machine quite a bit and for various different types of coffees. If your machine is still covered by the manufacturer I would suggest contacting them about the problem or call your local specialty coffee shop. They normally have or know of a guy that can fix this rather simple problem for cheap. Happy brewing!
I had the same problem but with the power button on the front panel. It's a major operation involving opening the machine. Disconnct completely from mains power. On the rear there are 2 screws middle top and middle bottom When they are removed the back can be slid upwards and removed. Then there are four screws on the back holding the side panels.. When removed the sidepanels can be slid backwards and of. Pry of the little plastic button on top of the grinder adjuster in the bean container. Underneath is a screw that needs to be removed. The top is held by 2 screws on the forward part along the top. When removed the top plate can be pried upwards. The front is the held by 2 extra screws half way down along the front. When you removed these the front along with the panel can be taken of. The panel is connected with the electronics with a flat cabel that runs along the left side. Pry the cabel lock open at the electronics board and fre the cable. Now you have the front panel free and can work with it. On the cabk there are 4 bigger screws. remove these and notice how the back plastic cover and the front are layered. With the 4 screws removed you can lift the panel with the buttons out forn the front panel and se how the buttons a mountet. My power button was broken of the little tabs that held it and had fallen down behind the panel. I reattached the button with som gaffer tape loosely on the back so it stayed in place but had movement enough to be usable. Clean out the interrior while you are in there. Assembly is the reverse and everything is back in order. There is a youtube video with a complete dismantle process: ffnen Dichtungs und Raccordtausch Delonghi Perfekta Pronto Cappuccino ESAM...

If the grounds are too fine the water will pool and not wash through the grinds which could lead to an over flow. Proper size grind is important. Use an alternative source fro grinding the coffee.

Set the temperature to "extra hot" If still not hot enough, try zapping your coffee for a few moments in the microwave.. no coffee machine will boil the coffee as this would burn and cause an awful burned coffee taste
Just had the same problem after washing my ESAM5500. Seems that some water hot on the switch that is triggered when grounds container is inserted. My solution was removing the bottom panel (5 screws if I remember correctly) and disconnect the green wire from the switch (there are three wires - green, ping and blue). When the green wire is disconnected, coffee maker thinks that grouns container is inserted all the time - even if it is removed.
