A couple of ideas. 1st does the TV have an earphone jack or AUX out . If so you can get an adapter to go from this plug to your line in on your reciever(if using the earphone jack set the volume low and adjust it up to a suitable level. Too much input from earphone jack could damage system). 2nd if you have a satelight or cable box it may be possible to hook a sound sysyem through these devices instead of the TV. If not using these devices you could get a digital TV conversion box on a whether you need it or not basis and run line out on some of these also.

Try just turning the volume down on the TV. The audio power to the red/white output jacks should be the same at any TV volume since it is expecting you to control the volume with an audio receiver or other amplifier.

I really need to know the brand and model number of your universal remote to give the correct instructions. It's also depends on whether or not the universal remote will operate all functions of your TV.

The original Curtis Mathes TV had an INPUT button for switching from TV to AV mode. You should look for a similar button labelled INPUT or SOURCE on the universal remote. If you have one of these buttons, try pressing it repeatedly and see if the TV switches to AV mode. It is easier if you have the AV device (DVD / VCR, etc) switched on and playing while you do this.

If you don't have either of these buttons on your universal remote or you have one and it doesn't switch to AV mode, please let me know the brand and model number of your universal remote. I will then be able to give a more specific answer. Please reply to me by clicking on "Add a Comment" below your question.

Usually when this happens its caused by CC closed captioning
Check your CC settings and disable

GO TO YOUR MENU ON THE TV BY USING YOUR REMOTE AND RESET THE SOUND SECTION TO OTHER THEN SS OR SURROUND SOUND.

www.replacementremotes has them for around $30. You might try Wal*Mart for a universal remote. See back of package for applications.

Check ur tv converter box a small button on the back of the converter box make sure it is not set to channel 4,make sure it set it to channel 3.Put ur tv on channel 3.Take the antena signal input put it in the converter box hole that call ANT.Take the wire that came with the converter box put the wire one side of it connected to the other hole into the converter that said OutPut.The other side of the wire should be connected to the hole in the tv said ANT hole.Now make sure ur tv converter box power a/c cord plug into the a/c power outlet and the power button is press on and have power to the converter box.The converter box now power LED light on indication should be on and it is green.Now the tv CRT screen picture should have a menu of the converter box funsctions.Just follow the on screen instructions and press the enter button on the remote and it will now auto scan for those free air Digital DTV channels.When the auto scan it reaches 100% is it done.Now u have done it.

Their is a leaky capacitors in the vertical section of your tv. example of vertical ic LA7837 try to replace the capacitors beside it.
