Why would my projector refuse to start with a seemingly intact light bulb?

If you only have 300 hours on it it should still be under warranty. Before doing something to void that I would check with Optoma techs.

Parts illustrated breakdown

If it is the lens you have other problems that would let it get that hot. Can't be sure, but I would first check the bulb to make sure it has not smoked. If so it must be replaced. When handling the bulb let it cool down or you can get severly burned. Never let your skin touch it or the oils on your skin can damage the bulb. I usually use a t-shirt or something to wrap it in while handling it or you could just wear cotton gloves.

Does the Optoma HD20 DLP projector have a air filter? If it does, where is it located?

Hello The Optoma HD20P doesn't have an air filter. If you remove the covers you will find 2 cooling fans that get a build up of dust on the leading edges of the fan blades. These can easily be cleaned with a small paint brush and a drinking straw to blow out the excess dust. If you are having overheating problems, please view my post on replacing the heat sink compound on the image processor. Cheers

Optoma hd20 fan shut down

I put this here because when I was experiencing the same issue I found there was very little info online for this topic. Optoma asked me $125 just to take a look at my out of warranty hd20 projector after I started getting the dreaded "fan failure" error message, I got this error mesage after replacing the bulb (its important to note that the bulb did explode in the unit so some of the debris may have lodged in the fan.) Optoma also kept saying stuff like motherboard issues and fan sensors on the phone. Everything I've read has said the repair price is so high on these issues that it is better to upgrade to a new projector so I resigned myself to doing that very thing. Then I ran up on this video and thought what the heck. So I took the plunge and popped the case off and sure enough the same little fan was stuck and covered with dust. I gently moved it with a screw driver and blew all the dust out of it. Plugged it back in and I'm experiencing glorious 135" hd once again.

Seeing vertical lines on the picture

do the lines follow the same vertical pixel width from top to bottom or do they cross pixels? first try going into the menu and select auto-adjust. it just might be out of sync. you can adjust the resolution as well. if nothing changes, you might have a bad dmd (digital micromirror device). if that's the case and the projector is pretty old, replace the projector.
