You might try the drive on another computer to see what result you get. If the same, I would try a repair operation on the HD to see if that helps the situation. Right-click the drive, click Properties, Tools, and run a repair. I don't know if you'll get that menu option.If not, I would next try Explore, This PC, Computer (at the top of the window), Manage, Disk Management and see if the drive is seen there, and whether you're offered a repair option.

Hi First thing you do is go to bios by pressing dell,f10,f11 depending on your model check the boot option is it set properly than change the drive mode to IDE if its set to AHCI or the other and save and exit than boot your system does it work what is the message comes please let me know. if it is booting than well and fine if not than you have to remove your hard drive and connect to any pc and check the contents if it show the file system fine than just back up your data and reinstall your operating system. please feel free to contact me for any help.

If the hard drive in the IBM laptop is OK then remove the hard drive from this laptop. sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

hmmm so you have this on USB port. you might want to try this first:A. shut down computer and ext drive powerB. Turn on computer and let boot up, w/o hard drive power onC. Well u may have it plugged in USB slot but needs to be USB 2.0 .if in regular. USB..will run slow...also external he'd when u not using. It unplug. From USB and AC plug...not good to just let run..they will were out..defrGment hdd to.good luck
