If the room is cool, it sounds like the unit is operating correctly. It could be short cycling because the unit is over sized for the room being conditioned. if you can, increase to size of the load by opening a door into another room. As long as the refrigerant pressures equalize from high to low side internally and the compressor doesn't start up under load, you should be fine

What is your air con problems?

Should be hinged on one side. Pull the top or bottom and it should open

You need to drain the water from the reservoir. Pull off the upper and lower hoses and empty it

You need to pull out the drain bin and empty all the water out of it

Seriously... I suspect you are right... it OUGHT to work without the remote... BUT no model number came through with your question... NEVER-THE-LESS... the cheapest... shortest path to being cool is the price of a remote... I'd buy a SPARE (too = two)...!! Later, at your leisure, you can RISK having a "professional" look it over! Hi Anonymouse! Please check first the compressor for something like working. If it only vibrates, you notice a high temperature in it. If this hapens, just replace the capacitor of the compressor... a white tube with 2 wires in one side and a possoble screw on the other (tipical values for europe is 400VAC in USA 200VAC and capacities from 4 to 20uF. If the compressor it´s running, and you notice one of the pipes slightly cooler than the other, well, then you need to load gas and a help from a pro with proper equipment! Good luck

check that the compressor is working ( feels hot) call a technician to check gas pressures and start /run capacitor for the compressor motor

If an Air Conditioner is on cooling then the Air Conditioner also removes humidity from the air any Split Unit, Window Wall A/C you name it... Any A/C on cooling dehumidify the air in the room.

To decrease the volume of the water:
1) Clean Air filter/s
2) Keep doors and windows close( can open now and again).

I don't know how that portable A/C of your look like but I believe theirs a water pan inside that needs cleaning I think it's full.( best is to service the hole A/C).

Try using an old toothbrush, as it is stiff enough to clean most of the deposits, yet soft enough not to damage the thermocouple and flame seat. Just make sure that the unit has cooled down first!
