and boot from it

Try to contact HP for a one-time BIOS password.

This is because the new HDD does not have an operating system on it and the computer tryes to boot using LAN. You will have to install WINDOWS from CD/DVD or USB. Ask here for directions please

When you connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED light up? If not then - The battery adapter or the adapter's power lead or the laptop's power socket could be faulty. You may need to use a an XP installation disc and reload the OS onto it's self. Check your MS Product sticker for correct version if its not XP.Being that its a mini, you may need to make and use an USB installer.

Go to device manger and have it rescan for hardware changes or simple reboot will cause windows to detect your hardware. Otherwise, go to hp's site and download the LAN drivers again.

Turn OFF the Notebook and once its powered ON, keep Pressing F10 to load BIOS screen of the Notebook. In this screen under Diagnostics, run the test on hard drive and memory. Post back the results here.
