The sky box doesn't support playing MP3s. That USB is not for mp3 players it's for something else, like updating the skybox.

Try Sony's website for the files. They should be under the downloads or support option if you search for your player on Sony's site.

Sky put the USB ports on the boxes in case they wanted to use them in future. They are there but not active.Bit like the eSATA socket on the back, it isn't used yet but they had ideas to use it!I guess if they had to replace boxes all over the country to put a USB in would have been a bit of an issue for them, so best they fitted one from the start...

4. Open Universal Serial Bus controllers, and select USB Mass Storage Device or WALKMAN NWZ-XXXXX.
5. Select Action - Update Driver ... from the menu bar. "Welcome to the Hardware Update Wizard" is displayed.
6. A dialog on Windows Update connection will be displayed. Select No, not this time., followed by Next.
7. Select Install from a list or specific location [Advanced], followed by Next for the hardware install method.
8. Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install., followed by Next for the search and install option.
9. Check Show compatible hardware, and then select MTP Device* in the model list, followed by Next. The device driver is installed.
10. "Completing the Hardware Update Wizard" message is displayed, and confirm "MTP Device" message. Click Finish.

Opne the menu and audio settings and if there is a preset equaliser change the settings to pop/rock. If there is a custom settings you must set with the mid frequency switched up. this must solve the issue.

Plug it in. There should be some software on it to install the Sony.

Check the headphones work ok on another device. If they are ok, the headphone socket may have been damaged.

When your MP3 is connected to the PC.
Click start -> Right-click 'My Computer' -> Properties -> Device Manager and your MP3 may show up with a yellow exclamation mark next to it on this window. Right click it and select 'Update Drivers'. Click next, Tick the option 'Let me choose driver...' then choose USB Mass Storage Device and click next and it should work.
