Starting today my drive is being read as a cd-rom

This in indicative of a dying drive.

I have no idea why but external drives do seem more prone to it.

Additionally if you have recently added any new burning software you may want to un-install it as I have seen that too fix similar issues.

May I suggest you connect it to a different computer first to eliminate your own computer as a suspect.

Make sure you use the leads that came with the drive and not one that just happens to fit as some leads are not always compatible even though they may look the same.

If it is still under warranty you may want to investigate that option.

Hope this gives you enough to get you sorted out as to what to do next.

The ASUS sdre-08d1s-u is not

I have the exact same unit, and after about 100 burns the little guy gave out on me. If it isn't burning, I would recommend going into your device manager on your computer and checking to see if your USB hub is functioning properly. In that doesn't work, or you don't find any issues, try plugging it into a different machine to check and see if your computer is the one at fault. Often, the motor itself is the damaged unit, rather than the internal workings, so the computer says it's working fine, and lo and behold, the drive won't work. If that doesn't work out for you, then unfortunately it sounds like you're out of luck, and it would be cheaper to just purchase a new one.

How do you set the

It should have a quick installation guide, a USB "Y" cable and a disc with Turbo Engine, ASUS Live Firmware Update, and Power2Go on it. The drive does not plug into a wall outlet; rather, it pulls its power from two USB 2.0 ports on your computer. This is a nice feature if you use a laptop.
Typically you would run the software and then after (or sometimes during you will be prompted), the software is installed you just plug it in and the computer should recognize it. Should be pretty easy. If it doesn't work that way simply uninstall the software, plug the unit into you computer and then run the software. If there's no prompt telling you to plug it in during the install then it can only be one of the 2 ways. I would start with the unit unplugged and wait for a prompt or for the disk to finish, if you don't have a guide.
Hope this helps

The drive plays DVDs and can read doc files, but

This problem is normal and exists with many CD/DVD drives.
On some of the drives, if you put in blank discs and try to open the disc in My Computer or Windows Explorer, Windows displays no contents or a blank disc. Whereas on other drives, you get the error message that you mentioned about incorrect function.

What software are you using to burn CDs or DVDs? Are you able to burn CDs but not DVDs or you can't burn both the discs? Did you try a CDs with a different make/manufacturer? Some drives refuse on some disc makes. Try another disc and another writing speed, or try the lowest writing speed available with your software.

Hope that helps,
