I plug my car nuvi into a USB adapter in my car and it goes to the computer loading screen even though it isn't plugged into a computer. Why?

To charge you use the cigarette lighter adapter! Not USB port.

Does your Garmin Nuvi 265W Freeze at Loading Maps?
Does it lock up or stop working?

This tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to backup your 'Favorites' in case the hard reset erases them. The next step in fixing your Nuvi when it doesn't start properly is to update its system software using Garmin WebUpdater.

A hard reset (or Clear All User Data) has been known to resolve unit quirks and strange behavior. It's generally recommended to perform it after a firmware update but is not required by any means. However, if you're seeing quirks and strange behavior with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good idea to do a hard reset of the unit.

Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:

The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

  1. From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
  2. After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on the Nuvi where they are actually stored.
Perform the Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit

  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
  3. Install the battery.
  4. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  5. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?" prompt appears.
  6. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 265W GPS unit.

I hope that helps.

How to tell if have most recent mapping updates

Go to the Garmin web site and use their software to see what the status is. If there are updates the software will tell you. Software and firmware updates are free; new maps you pay for.

For my Garmin Nuvi 265w, how to add a new favorites category?

Select a favorite. That will take you to map view. Tap the pin icon. That opens a menu. Select Edit favorite.. Select 'category' from the listed options.. At the bottom of the screen select the 'new' button. Disclaimer: Tested with a different model (50) so YMMV.

FORGOT PIN NUMBER

Take it back to your 'safe location' which you set when you entered the pin number twice. It will automatically unlock as soon as it has a clear view of the sky (satellite reception).

My Garmin 465 won't stay turned on. Keeps starting over and over. Seems the port in the back is real loose

Unfortunately, the problem is with the charging port on the unit, which is from wear and tear. If the charging cable will not stay connected due to damage on the port, the best bet is to replace the entire GPS. You'll notice the port damage when the charging cable is fully seated and it still "wiggles" around. While Garmin's technical support may, and I mean may very loosely, offer a repair option at a fee it may be best to replace the unit with one of the newer models that include lifetime maps and the latest firmware. If the damage is to the cable, then it's a much cheaper option to purchase a replacement.
