I see you mentioned the speakers provide very little volume from it.
It also should have a Volume knob on the speakers right? is it already in Full? you mentioned that all the settings in Windows have been checked and still the audio isn't that of what it was before when you had it connected to your HP.
Have you installed the Drivers for that speaker if ever it has it's own drivers I believe it should be installed for maximum performance of the device.
Very low volume output at full volume
click start control panel sounds and audio devices you can adjust the volume there also select speaker volume you can change your settings there you can also tick in the box place icon in taskbar
if his does not fix the problem
click start control panel sounds and audio,volume,advanced,speakers select the appropriate speakers from the drop down list or navigate to the device manager scroll to system devices + to expand,system speaker right click properties then select use this device (enable) also you might check
the speakers plug/outlet is usually at the back of the computer you will have to open up the computer to check the lead attached to the rear of the input plug make sure the connection is goodtry cleaning your computer of dust using a fine air blower from a compressor making VERY sure that there is no MOISTURE in the air line specifically around the sound card and the CPU central processing unit dust causes static to build up in a computer hope this helps

Sound is too low
Go to START>Control Panel>Sound HQ/Sounds and Audio Devices or something similar. Make sure your speaker volume is up (Move the sliding tab to the right). And that your Speakers Volume is up(A tab on the bottom area of sounds, in advanced tabs, or properties. Slide the tab to the right for louder, left for quieter) and make sure your Mute button is UNCHECKED.

Polk computer speakers work in laptop but not on desktop computer
desktops now a days have more than one plug for the speakers. try playing some music and play which hole works.
if there is a 5.1 or surround on the desktop then most likely the light green jack isnt stereo out but rather unamplified signal. thus when you plug head phones into it the internal amp drives the headphones, but wants the computer to drive the speakers.
try plugging it into the black one... or play pick a hole till it works.

Looks like your audio drivers have gone. have you tried system restore? Go to start, all programs, system tools system restore, then choose a previous date when your sound was still ok.
Polk audio pa660 is in protection mode how do I reset it.
