It seems to me to be the battery. Batteries vary from watch to watch but the norm is 2 years. But you never know how long a watch has sat on the shelf of a store, etc.
I would take to a local jeweler to have them test the battery in your watch.

There are 3 ways
1) Can be pried off with a very small screw driver.
2) It can be screwed off. Like the lid on a peanut butter jar. Need special tool to do it.
3) There may be 3 to 5 screws on the back that can be removed.
This gives you access to the battery inside.
Note:
Not sure where you are located, but just take your watch to the jewelry counter at Walmart and they will do it for you. Battery about $8 Watch how they do it, and you'll be able to do in the future!

There isn't any definition yet to recognize which side of battery is front and which one is back, so, whatever you'll say will be OK.
In your case you are naming +signed side as a backside. This side (+) must face watch's caseback. That means; when you open the watch and look in to it - you see the backside of the battery and see the + sign & Energizer 3V.

Contact a local jeweler and see if they do restringing. Most will charge approx $10 per inch.

No manual, just this. You can however just search by the number of buttons, 2 , 4 or 4. They are all the same. Google 4 button chronograph watch manual
