Some machines have a three answering modes.
1-manual-you have to pick up the fax headset and then press send when someone calls you with a fax.
2- auto-The machines answers the phone line when it rings and receives the fax automatically.
3-answer- the machines acts like a voice answering machine only.

Check your display or user settings to see that it in in AUTO RX or receive mode. .

This is scanner defect. You could have a scrap of paper or something in the slot where your documents are fed in but I suspect that the scanner led array has a few bad led's and that is what is causing the black line. When your original is fed in there is a "light bar" that lights up to scan the original. This light bar is made up of a row of small led lights. I have seen these led's loose connection so that a few do not light up and this causes the problem you describe. They are usually repairable but the problem is you can replace this fax with a new one for under $100 and the repair most likely will cost more.

go to report settings there u can fond tx report. put it on

start by inserting a document into machine and press the copy button. if come out ok then check your phone line to see if it's live and plugged into the right slot marked "L" and not phone. if still not able to fax try to call that number using a regular phone and listen for the high pitched squeeling noise.

If all page are coming out blank there is only one possibility. The Thermal Head (basically heats the ink on to the paper) has failed. It should be a relatively cheap fix but like you said the machine is know over five years old.

Question edited for clarity. 985 or 895? Usually because the jam hasn't been cleared or the machine hasn't been reset. Remove the paper tray an open the cartridge bay. Open the rear paper door, check underneath. This machine has a lot of paper scraps in it. :>D
