When sewing and the foot is down, the discs should be closed and thus giving the upper thread the tension it needs.

Not necessarily, a thin needle will break on heavy weight materials, the needle clamp screw could be loose, it could be an issue with the pressure foot (wrong type or mis-installed), or you could be pulling the fabric too quickly. Before you assume the timing is bad...

• Use correct size needle.
• Properly insert needle.
• Securely tighten needle clamp screw.
• Use correct presser foot.
• Reset presser foot.
• Do not pull fabric, guide it gently.

Open up the bobbin area and clean out any lint or thread that may have accumulated.

Thread the machine with the presser foot up.

When changing the position of the fabric (turning a corner or sewing a curved seam, for example), lower the needle into the fabric to prevent the stitch from malformation and tangling with the bobbin thread.

Start sewing by holding onto the thread ends and hand walking the needle into the fabric for one or two stitches.

If this problem continues, the timing may need to be adjusted and this does require a trip to the shop for proper service.

You should make sure it is grounded. Also, is it getting oil from the pan? Blown fuses usually mean there is an overload in the motor. Check that the belt is not too tight.
