I have a Necchi 1537

When you say it is off I hope ypou mean it is not adjusted properly, top tension about 4 or 5, you should be able to just pull the bottom thread through with the slightest resistence, if it is too tight just slacken the screw on the bobbin case anti clockwise about a quarter of a turn and test and repeat if necessary.

Please let me know where I can buy a bobbin winder

Your machine is not actually made by Necchi, it is a standard model that lots of manufacturers buy and have their own name put on, email me and tell me what the problem is [email protected]

My machine will not zigzag.

You need to take the width setting up to 4 and length down to 2 or less if you want a close zig zag. You may not want it that wide but usually 4 is the maximum width.

There is probably also a stitch selector if your machine has several stitch patterns it can do. I've looked at an image at http://www.stevekraftrepair.com/uploads/resized-P9200750.JPG and it looks to me like the left hand knob on the front of the machine is the stitch selector and is colour coded in with the images on the front panel. I just can't make out which number is the zig zag, it could be the red number 4??? So you would put this dial onto the zig zag, then turn the other dial up to a wider stitch width and I am guessing that the little blue box lower down the case has the reversing button and the stitch length setting.

Usually it pays to turn the width to zero BEFORE you make changes to the stitch selector, most machines seem to like being treated this way, ie engaging cams inside the works.

Also, it is always a good idea to check what foot you have on before you start sewing a swing needle stitch just to make sure that you don't hit the foot with the needle. Some feet are designed for straight stitch only and have a little hole but obviously this is not going to work for a zigzag stitch.

I hope this is of help and that I have understood your problem.

I have a necchi 535FA.

Could be broken part OR more likely the drive to a part of the mechanism that does the motion foir the special stitches. Since restoring this involves setting the timing, this is NOT a DIY repair. Best to take this to a repair shop. Wrong timing can also bend or damage parts of the mechanism.

I have a Necchi 3205FA

Hello,
Sewing machines are very touchy. It is almost impossible for someone that does not have knowledge of the intricate workings of the inside of a sewing machine to fix this. It looks simple enough but it is not. I would recommend taking your sewing machine to a sewing machine technician and spending $20 - $25 on a tune up. Messing with them gears in there can only create more problems.

I'm having trouble gathering fabric...no matter

So you are sewing two rows of straight stitch at 10mm and 20mm from fabric edge with a stitch length of 4? Are you using good quality thread? I like Molynecke, Guttermann or Sylko Supreme.

Try loosening the top and bottom tension too, and use a gathering foot if you have one.

A quick solution is to zig-zag over a length of pearl cotton or similar heavy weight string/thread, this works well for large volumes of gathers such as around a bed valance frill.

For large volume gathering like cushions and bed frills, I use a pleater/ruffler attachment, however, this has only 3 settings so isn't a variable gathering effect.

I need to know how to make a button hole, can't

Hi there, don't know your machine but you can do a plaiin buttonhole manually.
Set machine up for zigzag stitch, needle to left side, mark out the size you need with pins or marker pen. Start at the top and set for widest zigzag with 0 length for the top bar, cannot give sizes as don't know the button you are using, about 6 stitches, set stitch width to just over half the width of top bar and length to approx 0.5. Stitch down to bottom marker and again set up ffor the wide bar, do the same amount of stitches as the top, finish with needle down at the outside edge, turn work so that you will now stitch down the other side to meet the top bar, not forgetting to adjust stitch length and width again.
Hope this helps

The manual leaves me hanging

I assume the machine has made a buttonhole if it is at the tacking stage? If so pull up threads and cut off. You can leave a long thread and sew it inot the fabric by hand but there is usually no need to do this, the tacking holds pretty well.

Its been idle for too long and needs a good service. Try and trickle some oil behind the stop motion wheel. But what it actually needs is to have the wheel removed and then apply oil to the shaft. Careful when you start again as oil will fly out from the wheel so mind your drapes and wall decor.

The instruction manual that I got with my machine

Hi
I couldn't find any manual for you for your machine.
I did find an online threading guide, but I expect that it is the same as your manual.
http://www.sewusa.com/Threading_Diagrams/Threading_Pages/Necchi_Sewing_Machine_Threading/Necchi_3537_threading_Diagram.htm
The drawings don't look too bad, they are quite typical of most sewing machine manuals!
I find videos on www.youtube.com more useful for my machine in terms of the different feet and what they do as well as the different techniques to try. Just type in the search box what you are looking for, e.g sewing zippers, sewing buttonholes etc.
Hope this helps!

Will not feed the material through

Be certain the presser foot lifter handle is down so that it holds the fabric from the top. Then make sure the feed dogs (the little toothy looking things under the presser foot) are up or engaged. Often we'll accidentally knock the adjustment button/lever and the feed dogs go down into the machine and will not come up to provide the pulling action to feed the fabric through. Make sure the mechanics inside the machine are clean and free of dust. And if you see what seems to be a piece of felt around the feed dogs, that is actually lint and prevents the fabric from moving through easily. Use the brush that came with the machine to clean the feed dogs. Hope this helps and happy stitching!

I have a Necchi 537FA sewing machine. It sill sew

have you checked to see if the needle is bent-lay the needle on a flat surface & roll the needle over,, if the needle does not roll good -replace
blunt needle-if the needle makes a popping sound when the needle penetrates the fabric,,the needle is blunt-replace
sometimes if the thread comes off the thread take-up lever it can jam the thread in the bobbin area
try rethreading the machine
check to make sure the thread isn't wrapping around the spool pin
check the spool of thread to see if the notch on the spool is catching the top thread
check to see if there's a burr on the bobbin case
I hope one of these suggestions helps you
