Just got a used simplicity serger how to use and

Sergers do pretty much have a certain function--to finish raw edges, although there are some other decorative things you can do with a serger if it has the capability. Download the pdf file at this site to get some ideas: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CB8QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.peggyddesigns.com%2Fpdf%2FYOU_DID_THAT_WITH_YOUR_SERGER.pdf&ei=eq9sVczgLMbtsAWOroHIDw&usg=AFQjCNEaebGu1AksU57pm61P6mvGGcS4VA&bvm=bv.94455598,d.b2w You can also join some sites that will email you projects every week that can be made on a serger. A serger is great for making t-shirts (stretchy fabric), tablecloths, napkins, placemats, etc. The rolled hem is nice! And, yes, you can make quilts although it is best to use a sewing machine when intricate stitching of pieces require that the points meet, and the 1/4 inch seam is pertinent to the design. A serger does do a great quilt by serging strip pieces together where the 1/4 inch seam allowance and matching points are not a requirement. It will put a strip-pieced quilt top together very quickly. (Its really quick if you purchase the precut Jelly Roll fabric.) But you will need to figure out how to quilt the top, batting, and backing together using something other than a serger--or pay someone to do it for you. Or try making a Quilt as You Go quilt where you would serge the top strip, batting, and backing strip all together. When you are finished putting the quilt together, all you will need to do is add the binding--the first part you can use a serger, but when you flip the binding over to the front side to finish, you'll probably want to handstitch it. if the serger is new, then take it backif its not new,, it sounds like there could be a problem with the feeddogs or with the timing, it would be a good idea to have the machine checked at a sewing machine repair shop..

I need help with the tention settings on my simplicity serger pro please

All the problem that everyone had with the Simplicity Serge Pro are able to be fixed with the manual. I downloaded the manual from the Simplicity Home page: www.simplicityhomecare.com. That simple. Thank you for your assistance because you made me realize that I had to go get the answer myself if I wanted to get anything done yesterday. Waiting for 24 hours was just too long for me. There is also an 800-822-6691 hotline as well. I have already finished my project. Have a great day!

Serger clanking/binding?

Well first of all STOP SEWING until you have this resolved. open up the door to the loopers and hand turn the wheel while you observe carefully what it's doing. Feel for any binding as you turn the wheel while noting where the loopers are. If you find some binding or clunking Gently wiggle the loopers to check for play or slop. Everything look ok? ... If you are not mechancially inclined... please take it back and tell the guy it's worse than before (meaning he didn't repair it) Ask him to fix it properly this time on his dime. Cutting a pin could have knocked it out of time.... if that is the case you should fess up and pay to have it timed.

Mine is a simplicity 804 easy lock

Your knives may be blunt and need sharpening or replacement.

Check also if the knives are aligned properly. Remove the material and turn the handwheel slowly. The knives should pass each over like a pair of scissors and there should not be any cap between the blades.

If everything seems to be okay and it still does noet cut tne material, replacement is the only option.

I need a manual for a Simplicity Easy Lock Serger

You can purchase a manual for this machine from the following link for $US14.99 http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/instruction-manual-simplicity-sl4300.aspxI can't see it anywhere for free download unfortunately. But you may find that looking at a manual for another 4 thread overlocker may get you started. If you try this link http://www.singerco.com/accessories/instruction-manuals you can look at the free Singer downloads, try this link for their 654 3/4 thread model http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/555_14sh644_654-(e_s_f)-(new-led-version).pdfit may give you some help now. Essentially, to change the stitch width you can either move the lower fixed blade wider to cut less fabric or tighten up the upper and lower looper threads in order to close up the stitching.Moving the blade usually means opening up the front cover door, putting pressure on the upper blade and swinging it up out of the way. Then you can adjust the lower blade, usally by turning a knob near to it. Sometimes this knob will be marked 1, 2, 3.Adjusting the looper tensions is done by changing the tension dial settings for the thread needing adjusting. If its a standard four thread overlocker that produces a "marrow" seam it will have two needles and two loopers, upper and lower. Generally on most overlockers, the upper looper will be the second from right tension dial and lower looper will be right most tension dial - turn up one half number to tighten, or down one half number increment to loosen, then test stitch again. The needles shouldn't need adjusting too often.I usually start with all tension dials on 5, test stitch, then adjust from there. Some fabrics will tunnel (pull in) if the seam is too wide so you need to either move the blade to the left and trim more fabric or loosen off the loopers. Or in the reverse, like you are getting, the threads will hang off the edge. There is some good serger information on Debbis Cosgrove's pages www.sewing.about.com but if you have never used a serger, then getting the genuine manual is probably best.

Correct settings for 804dsp serger to sew a

Are you wanting to use the serger to sew a hand knitted sweater together? or do you mean a sweat shirt knit or other knit fabric. If it is the first option, I'd say don't bother, as you can't do it with the blades working because it will cut your knitting and the wool will unravel in the seams. If it is the second option then I would start with the following settings.Four thread stitch, so both needles and the upper and lower loopers threaded. Set tension on all four dials to 5, stitch length to between 2 and 3, and differential on zero. Move the cutting blade over to the right for a wider seam. Now test stitch on some fabric scraps double layer and see what the seam is looking like. Now you want to adjust a couple of things: firstly width of the seam. Is it the size you want? If you'd like it a little narrower, then adjust the cutting blade back a little to the left to narrow the seam slightly - just depends on the fabric weight. For example if it is a loose open weave like boucle you would want a wide seam to make sure it holds the fibres fully. Now you can adjust the upper and lower loopers to get the thread wrapping around the edge looking nice. Look at the seam and the fabric inside it. Is it tunnelling and pulling up the fabric? if so, release tension on both loopers a half number to put more thread into the seam. Test stitch again and see if the loopers are meeting nicely on the cut edge of the fabric. Upper and lower looper threads should be meeting right on the cut edge so if this isn't happening and one showing on the other side, then tighten the looser one by half a number and test again. If the threads are hanging off the edge then you have the choice of moving the blade to the right to cut less fabric off, or tightening up the looper tensions to pull in the thread. That's it, hope this helps you to master your serger. If you'd like some images and further explanations of other stitching you can do with your overlocker, then Debbie Coswell has some great information on line at www.sewing.about.com, just search "overlocker" to find the specific pages.Good luck

If my machine is not

not necesarily, can you see a knick in either of the two blades? use a magnifying glass and see if you can see any damage first.

Then try changing the fixed bottom blade only first, you may have got a replacment top blade in your accessory bag new with the machine.

The blades themselves are very high grade steel just like scissor blade so should last for quite a long time, provided they don't come into contact with a pin.

You can buy the bottom blade for your machine here http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/lower-knife-babylock-60544.aspx along with the top blade and other spares.

Also, remember to clean the blades of lint regularly and give them a wipe with a cloth moistened with a little clear sewing machine oil from time to time.

How do you lengthen stitch. The stitches are so

your machine should have a stitch length dial on the right hand side above the flywheel, it might have numbers from 0.5 to 3 or 4, higher number for longer stitch (effectively this moves the foot and feed dogs faster in relation to the needles to make the stitch longer).

If you have the Serge Pro SW432 that your enquiry is linked to and you have not used a serger before, then definitely get hold of the manual, you will need it. Sergers are very different to sewing machines - once you've mastered one, its easy, but there is a learning curve.

Firstly, ALWAYS extend the thread aerial up, you'll see loads of images of sergers sitting nicely with the aerial in the lowered position, great for moving them to avoid damage. But they won't work well, a serger seams at 1500 stitches per minute and the thread streams off the cones so you need to ensure there is a good clear feed via the aerial to the tension dials.

Buy good quality thread cones and keep it out of the sun and dust. Cover your machine when not in use (lower the aerial first). You could start with white, grey and black thread as this will cover a lot of fabric prints/colours etc. To change thread colour, you will need to cut and knot on the new thread for the two loopers (right hand side cones) - do this about 6 inches above the first thread guide, and then chain off to feed these through down to the needle plate, when you see the new colour come through okay, stop. Repeat the process for the needle thread or threads (3 or 4 thead depending on what stitch you are sewing) but stop chaining when the thread knot is above the needles. Stop, loosen these tension dials and pull the thread down, cut out the knot with scissors and thread the new colour through the two needles. Use threading wires if you have them, or tweezers. Pull both these and the two looper threads together under the pressure foot, lower the foot, turn your tension dials back to 5 and chain off. The thread sequence is important, mostly top looper, bottom looper, then needles, this is so much easier demonstrated than explained.

If you can find a classroom/shop offering overlocking user lessons, go take a couple, its well worth the money. Otherwise go to you-tube and watch all the videos you can search on sergers, threading, etc.

Good luck with your serger, please respond with 4 thumbs if this has been helpful to you. :-)
