When thread loops appear on the bottom, the problem is the tension in the top thread. If the bobbin tension was too loose, the loops would be on the top side of the stitching. This is true for all machines, whether mechanical or electronic.
Make sure you always follow these steps when threading the XL1000:
- The presser foot must be UP
- SNAP the thread into the first step of the thread path. Hold the thread taut with both hands as you pull it toward the front. You will feel the thread as it locks into the tensioner.
- Be sure the needle is the right type and size for the fabric being sewn, that it is not dull or barbed, and that it is inserted correctly into the needle clamp with the flat side toward the back of the machine.
If you have threaded properly and still have problems, there may be bits of lint or other debris caught in the thread path or interfering with the thread sensor inside the machine. You can take the top cover off to see. Turn the machine off, and unplug the power cord.
There are 5 screws on top and two at the back right that have to be removed. Do NOT remove the small screw by the bobbin winder. Keep track of which screws go where as you remove them so they can be replaced properly. Lift the handle while the cover is pulled up, out, and away from the machine. It may have to be gently rocked a bit to work it free from the left side. Remember this when putting the cover back in place.
Use a good strong light so you can clearly see down inside. If there are any bits of thread or excessive lint, they should be removed. DO NOT poke anything metal inside. I use a bamboo skewer (from the kitchen). While the cover is off you can also add a tiny drop of oil to the areas directly over the needle area where metal moves against metal. Turn the balance wheel slowly to find these points. Use only name brand SEWING MACHINE oil and always use it
sparingly. NEVER use household lubricants -- most are paraffin based and if used they will cause a gummy buildup that eventually binds the machine rather than lubricating it.
Replace the cover - remember to lift the handle to get it in place. Make sure the two little prongs at the top of the narrow front panel on the left front of the machine (where the thread goes down and back up) are placed in under the top cover before putting all the screws back in.
Plug the power cord back in, turn the machine on, re-thread, and run some test stitching. If you still have the same problem after going through these procedures, it may be time for shop service.
