Why does my thread keep bunching up?

That is called "thread nesting," and several things can cause it. The upper thread enters the bobbin area during sewing, catches the bobbin thread, and as the needle goes up, pulls the stitch tight. Something is catching the upper thread as it goes around. The most common reasons are the bobbin or bobbin case (or both) is improperly inserted; the bobbin is warped (roll it down a flat surface--if it wobbles, it's warped), either the case or the bobbin is not seated evenly, there is a rough spot on the bobbin case that is catching the thread, or your bobbin is loosely/badly wound. You need to rule out the possibilities step by step until you find the cause. First, review your threading procedures from start to finish, using your user's manual. Then, without fabric, turn the hand wheel by hand (ALWAYS towards you) to see if you can see it start to catch. The top thread should rotate smoothly in the bobbin area. You should be able to pin-point the cause that way.

What to do if machines timing becomes unaligned

First, what makes you thing that the hook is out of timing? If you cannot bring the bobbin thread up, it is an indication that your hook is out of timing. That can be caused by turning the hand wheel AWAY from you too many times; it can also be caused by getting a thread nest and forcibly turning the wheel. It involves loosening two Allen screws--usually 2.5 mm--on the other side of the gear that drives the hook, lowering the needle (#14 only) to its lowest point, and setting the hook so that it is EXACTLY 1/4" on the left of the needle, then tightening the screws again. If you have a vertical rotary hook, you also need to insure that your needle is in the middle of the basket. If you are determined to do this yourself, I would strongly recommend that you purchase the service manual for it; it's inexpensive and will help you a great deal. There are a number of YouTube videos on this, by the way.

Can't get the bobbin thread

Have you got the bobbin into the bobbin case the right way, usually when you look at the case you want the thread to come off the bobbin, go through the tension then change direction in a 'v' shape up to the needle plate.

Just recheck this against your manual and see if you've got it in the right way, it is easy to get wrong as Singer bobbins are same top and bottom.

if you con't have a manual then you should be able to get one from http://www.singerco.com/accessories/instruction-manuals

Singer 2517c -I need Threading instructions

Lift the needle to the highest point by turning the handwheel. Lift the pressure foot to release the tension on the system. Place the spool on the spool pin and put the spool cap on to hold the spool firmly.

Next bring the thread to the thread guide and snap it into the guide. Then slide the thread under the guide and through the slot (use one hand). Next lead the thread down on the right of the tension knob and up on the left. This puts the thread in the tension discs. Next slip the thread into the take up lever. (Bring the thread to the top of the lever and back towards the machine. Then slide the thread into the slot on the take up lever and then back towards you.

Next lead the thread through the next pair of guides. One is on the machine below the take up lever; the other is attached to the needle holder.

Finally thread the needles from front to back.

First check if there is a slight drag on the upper thread when you pull it through the machine (pulling it under the foot of the machine). Move the tension knob to the right to increase the tension. When you stitch a test piece, your top thread is visible on the bottom of your sewing thread, rotate the tension knob to the right by half a turn (get the dot closer to a higher number).

If there is no change in the tension as you turn the knob, take the machine for service. The springs in the tension system may need to be replaced.

The manual is available from Singer here: http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html . Enter only the 2517 model (leave off the c). A pdf is available for free; there is also an option to order a hard copy. A picture of the threading route is on page 28 of the pdf (page 26 as the manual is numbered).

I hope this helps.

Try checking the manual. If you don't have one, go to http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html where you can download one for free. It should tell you what bobbin you need in there. I know both of my Singers tell me the type of bobbin I need for each of them in their manuals.

I'm having a problem adjusting

I think that it is in your threading, try this trick, it may work for you. Insert a new needle (flat side facing away from you), now totally rethread with the presser foot up, When it is rethreaded, (presser foot up) pull thread, it should feed smoothly, put the presser foot down, pull thread, it should barely move. This should seat the thread in the tension discs. Put your tension dial at 3. I hope this helps you to get to the root of your problem

First, be certain you have the bobbin in the case correctly. Next, be sure you have a good, tight wind on the bobbin thread. Third, be sure the needle is inserted correctly( the groove should be toward the front of the machine). If none of these is the problem, I might have some other suggestions, but check each of these three first! Good luck!

Go to www.sewingpartsonline.com and you can order one for $11.99. This is a great spot for finding old parts. There are others but I have had good success with these people, fair prices and reliable.
