On these types of systems, that's part of what voice mail is for...to catch your caller rather than just issue a busy signal. If you have call waiting, then your phone should give you a tone when another call comes in so you can answer it and put it on hold and return to the original call. Only if you don't respond to the call waiting tone will the phone then go to voice mail. If you don't want the voice mail to take calls when you are present, you most likely will need to turn off your voice mail when you are present. Then, if there is no voice mail to fall back to, the phone will give a busy signal.

I cheated. I got a new adapter the right voltage and everything but the plug in would not fit so I cut the end off the old one and the end off the new one put the old end on the new adapter..I soldered them together, Taped them with light tape and it works perfect.

After looking through the instructions sheet I can tell you there is on speaker phone feature in the handset but you buy an optional headset unit that plugs to the side of the handset to make the system hands free. Most likely cause is power supply has shorted functions possibly due to overcharging or power surge I suggest openin up one of the handsets to look for burns on board or loose connections also if there is moisture or metal shavings

I would take the battery out then put it back in. It should reset. But you will need to put all the other things like time/date etc...
