Time consuming incoming automated phone call
With a CallPilot voicemail system, you could have the system recognize the caller id info of the call and send it directly into a mailbox, eliminating the need for your digital answering machine. That's the only option I am aware of.

Often a hum is caused by RF or EM interference. That the machine is recording calls clearly is consistent with this. The interference may be getting into the system through the power or telephone signal cable being near many other cables, or because the unit is situated next to a strong source of RF or EM field.
I recommend changing the location of your answering machine, away from such noisy sources (microwave, cordless phone, router, DC charging adapters, etc). Try the machine in an outlet that has nothing else on the circuit, if possible.

How do I record a new message
Hit memo and record message after the tone. It will then store it in the mailbox for someone to retrieve it when they get home.
