what mute? (ah Volume mute key) no operating system stated, vista, XP , windows 7, or w10 upgraded what? we cant NOT GUESS THIS. NO ONE CAN< blind. BIOS is that screen that works, with the hard drive missing, the minimum intelligence in the system. MIOS is better name. when you boot and you see words on the screen those first words like hit F1 for BIOS, or F9 or F10 or Escape. that is BIOS talking to you,! all PCs do , 1984 to now. BIOS actually boots the HDD or CDROM or a STICK USB if you tell BIOS to do that, called configuring BIOS> end bios 101 (im 69yo) all we have here is MUTE button as INPUT, I take it you never downloaded the HP manuals on this? dv6-1030us lucky you they are still there. as old as 2011 sys. get them while still there, ring true ( IT Does for SURE) RTM,. page 11 on first huge PDF "service GUIDE" http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-dv6-Entertainment-Notebook-PC-series/3837241/model/3860541/manuals this #3 is the mute volume button (lamp too) for this to work only the HP windows disks , used to install fresh windows, works, MS did not MAKE YOUR MACHINE HP DID ! Microsoft may not support this, , its a HP device only!

1. so did you use the wrong disks to install windows.
2. did you attempt to install drivers here ever? oops.
3. to make this key work there are 2 paths.
4. one path is install HP , op sys fresh, (you never stated yours)
5. you install that and all works like new. end story.
6. or path 2, vastly harder, using the HP page for your EXACT laptop and exact OS loaded (not MS but HP OS)
7. you then install all related drivers., the can be 2 or 3 depending on what laptop you have and OS installed. on my HP
8. the top panel seen below runs off a panel driver from HP.
9. There are under lying chip drivers that must work first.
10. so you go to DM , control panel device manager.
11. and correct all yellow or red marked bad drivers first.
12. Ill end there, i can not type every permutation of failure here, and the corrective actions step by step.... depends on whats wrong
13. or if the laptop is INFECTED with VIRUS. and other factors.
14. like others installing wrong drivers or wrong OS< etc.

why not join the real HP forum and ask there and not on this silly chat forum. fixya has zero structures to do that. on real HP there are libraries of structure and cross linked to the nth degree,

Try removing the battery, disconnect the power cord. Remove any other devices such as USB devices. Hold down the power button for about 1 min. Release the power button. Connect the power cord only, not the battery. See if the laptop will power up. If not please let me know the indicator light flash pattern.

The fan could be partially faulty and cannot spin fast enough. You can also purchase a fan assisted cooling pad and place the laptop on this cooling pad.
