Wiring Honeywell 9580 to old furnace with no C wire

This is not going to be easy. Check the wiring in the wall to look for the third wire. If they did not run one, you have to run new wire to the furnace and thermostat. If they stapled that wire to the walls inside studs, then it is going to be even harder to run the new wire. Once you run that new wire then you have to locate the connection in the furnace that has the common (c) wire for the transformer. Check you tube to see if the have any how to video.

Honeywell RTH8580WF thermostat regulates temperature to the cooling setpoint in both heating and cooling in auto mode. It is connected to a heat pump.

It's doing whats it is supposed to do and that's regulating the ambient temperature to your set temp.

No wifi connection

The WiFi has to be on. to get to the main programming, press fan & the up arrow @ the same time for about 5 seconds. Now that you are in the programming mode, you need to scroll through to, I believe level 39 and turn it ON. This will enable the WiFi. Then press done to get out of programming mode. Your thermostat should start searching now as long as there is WiFi to connect to. Then you need to register the stat. Hope that helps.

How do I fix the click sound in thermostat which causes the furnace to turn on & off?

Unfortunately, I know what your talking about...have several in remote Drs. offices, (one in my home), & they all click when calling for heat, cool, or fan. Other than that, it is a great thermostat with easy to use free apps.

Can a Honeywell CT87N switch from Heat to Cool on its own? Twice now I noticed it was cooler in my apartment and I went to thermostat and it had been switched from Heat to Cool on its own...

That's very unlikely. I'd sooner believe the cat has been playing with it or it gets changed when someone wearing a backpack brushes past it (sometimes the straps or zipper pulls snag the oddest things). You can get a thermostat guard to prevent this if your landlord permits it.
