If the pilots are lit and holding, the problem is not with the thermopiles, Did you turn the gas control knob from the PILOT position to the ON position. If not, that's the problem.Sanding the Thermopiles will serve no purpose, sine the pilots are lit and holding. When a Thermopile fails, it fails without any warning. In this particular case, you may need to recheck the batteries in the handheld remotes and the receiver boxes in the fireplace's control compartment. Make sure they are all the batteries are facing the proper direction and that all are strong. If I recall correctly, there should be 6 batteries total for each remote control. 2-in the handheld and 4-in the receiver box.
If you can continue to have a problem with this, please get back to me and include the Model Number for each fireplace, if they aren't identical.

Definitely sounds like there is a gas pressure problem. Are the gas lines feeding both appliances the proper size (at least 1/2" diameter)? Are they natural gas or propane units. If propane, what's the Btu rating of the regulator on the propane tank? If it's to low to handle the two appliance at one time, that could be the problem too.
Comes up with code 12 when turned down (
If you're getting an error code indicating incomplete combustion, that's a good indicator, that the unit needs a thorough cleaning inside and out. It's a sign that the burners are clogged, as well as the venturi valve (the air to gas mixture valve). Keep in mind that although Vent-free gas heaters are extremely safe and 99.9% efficient, they do use interior air for combustion. So, whatever is floating in your household air (dust, lint, pet hair, etc) gets pulled into the heater when it's in operation and clogs it up. Generally, cleaning it annually (usually, in the early Fall before firing it up for the heating season) is sufficient. But, if it's in a dusty environment, twice a season would be better.
Check the Maintenance section of your Owners Manual, as it goes into detail on how to clean the heater.
Hope this helped you. Please let me know.
Pilot light goes out when heater shuts down
Check the position of the thermocouple and if there is one make sure it is very close to the pilot flame Usually when a pilot light will not stay lit, it is an indication that the thermocouple is bad. Replace it.
