sounds like aproblem with the brushes are worn out or damaged armature if you contiue to use it before you check the brushes you will permetly damage it

In my case, capacitor C1: 470nF (on the circuit board) proved to be the cause. It measured only half its normal value. It's part of a voltage divider used in place of a transformer. Replacing it solved the problem. Came already across the same problem in another circuit.

I have just had the exact sme problem.
It is caused by a 1 watt resistor on the board.
You will also find that very possibly the large capacitor, a 0.1uF, has aso burnt out. This capacitor would have cracked open down the side and that is where the smoke came from.
parts can be replaced by a repair man and possibly a better solution is to have the board replaced, They are availiable still.

What resistors and capicitors are used on the motor control board on the Kenwood A901.

Force it out carefully. One person wrap tea towel over hook and turn forcefully, anticlockwise. Secnd person use a long handle screwdriver to hold the Kenwood still - wedge between the housing where the hook inserts. Hold Kenwood still whilst twisting the hook. When it comes apart, clean 'hole' and hook shaft thoroughly with WD40 / oil. Might need new hook if too damaged. Ours is ok seemingly.
