You can not tell me what setting to use on LANIER P-165 so that i can record someone and how far from them

If you want to record somebody 3-4 feet from you then use the dictate mode. If you want to pick up voices in a large room then use the conference mode, it increases the microphone sensitivity to the maximum level.

Speed on Lanier P-165 keeps changing. How can I fix it?

There is a fast play switch on the side of the unit. That switch may be failing. Try moving it back and forth repeatadly to clean up the contacts.

I need a user manual for the Lanier P165 Voice recorder

I need a manual, too; however, I may be able to take an educated guess at some of your problems.

To get it to work (after trouble-shooting for battery issues, etc.), you simply slide the long "button" up and down. There are four settings -- all the way up is "record," then under that is "stop," then "play," and finally at the bottom is "rewind," which it does audibly. The two buttons beneath that are FF and eject (just below FF).

On the other side, there are four switches -- The top one adjusts microphone sensitivity from dictate to conference, the next one is tape speed (higher number means better quality but shorter time on tape), then the VOR on/off switch (voice-operated recording) which would start and stop the recording as you speak into it. Then below those three is simply the "on/off" switch for the whole recorder, so it doesn't accidentally get turned on in your pocket and you unintentionally record something.

On the top appear to be a few input jacks, one for a mic I guess and maybe other is for a speaker or headphones? Then there's the mystery button, that is labeled something like "# | / AFF." I have no idea what it does, but it may be to assign your counter number (counter and reset button on the front face of the machine) to a specific tape, so you can change tapes and return later to your first tape again without losing your place. Just a guess.

Here's some info I found on a seller's website - it served as the basis for some of my guesses above: http://www.martelelectronics.com/p165lp.html.

Good luck!

Where is the recall button located on the Lanier VoiceWriter 160 transcriber?

It is under the flap located directly under the keyboard buttons. It is a slide switch and you can adjust it for a little recall or a lot of recall.

Lanier p-155 won't turn on

Some times the battery contact need to be pulled out a little bit. they are located down inside the battery compartment. You can stick a small screwdriver under the battery contact and bend it upward for better contact. If that doesn't work try removing the back cover and tightening the grounding screw, which is a silver screw located by the motor pulley hole. Sometimes this screw loosens up and then the ground is lost to the entire unit

Tape recorder will no longer play or record

Tape players need maintenance often. You have to replace the belt, clean the rubber roller with Rubber Renue, put grease on the odd spot and clean the head by rubbing clean white paper on it. Any electrical contacts like a volume switch etc need a contact spray to remove oxides etc. This should be done every 5 years or even more often if used more often.

Press the telephone button first with one finger and immediately after you press that button press the rewind button, The unit should go into rewind and erase should be flashing on the digital display. I have a Lanier Transcriber

This unit most likely has a broken rewind/fast forward rubber belt. This is a very common problem and is easily fixed if you can acquire a new belt. Any place that services Lanier equipment should be able to easily fix this problem.

I have a Harris/Lanier P

Hello, I will tell you what I do with mine when this happens, I've owned mine for about 10 years and still is going: put a recordable tape in the compartment and press the record and play buttons several times(record and stop several times) until the h pitch noise goes away, and it will, what happens is that the record activate switch gets erratic or intermittent and by activating it several times it will clean itself out, of course the best thing is to open the thing and clean it or replace it, but if your recorder is as small as mine there is hardly room to do anything in there. This also happens whent the record function is not used often. good luck!

MY PHYSICIANS ARE DICTATING ON

I assume that you are in the States ?

Swop the machines over to allow the Physicians machine to playback and yours to record

If the second unit has seen a lot of work playing back tapes then the playback heads could be dirty or worn

Dirty heads can be cleaned using either meythalated spirits or surgical alcohol and a cotton bud or a clean cloth, there is even a dedicated head cleaning cassette kit available from Radio Shack .

Click on the link below

http://www.amazon.com/Radio-Shack-44-1162A-Cassette-Cleaning/dp/B000AN2L5E

To clean the heads you need to remove the power open the cassette door and press play (Certain decks have a small lever which need to be pushed down manually burt which is automatic when you install a cassette , this allows the heads to come forward)

Once the head has come forward wipe it with a clean cloth soaked in either of the above (I prefer the Surgical Spirit as it leaves no residue) You should see a fairly black mark appear on the cloth as you rub, this is the oxide from the tapes surface

To get the best out of a head they need to be de-magnetised which is not so easy

Let me know what happens

LANIER LX231 WITH LANIER VTI LX547

We use this equipment in remote locations and have found that the type of phone needs to be a centrex line, such as is used on a fax machine. Note: in the past, we used to have to use an "analog" phone line, which is just a normal phone line.

You probably have two different phone lines involved here.
