How to fix element flx-3210 that has sound but no

It's probably a backlight or backlight inverter issue if the problem occurs on all sources and the onscreen menus. (The backlight itself usually fades or makes the on-screen image change to pink/red.) With a bad backlight, you'll usually see a very dim image if you look at the TV from an inch from the screen. Block the room light from overwhelming this image (sometimes a carefully positioned flashlight will help you see something). If the inverter or video board is bad, you will see nothing. For an out-of-warranty TV, open up the back of the TV and remove the shielding. Look for any scorch marks or bulging or damaged capacitors. (Sometimes other parts will fail on this part but these can be spotted easily. Capacitors look like cylinders on a tripod.) The scorch mark and smoke may indicate a resistor or zener diode that had been used as a fuse and is now gone.

If you borrow (or have a) high-end multimeter (able to measure high frequencies - 50 kHz) or an oscilloscope, hold the multimeter probes a fraction of an inch apart about an inch above the inverter board and power up the TV. If you see a 1 or an actual value, you have a good inverter. If you see a reading near 0, the board is bad or the multimeter can't resolve the frequency.

In either case, you can buy a replacement inverter for $50-150 and just do a simple swap. Disconnect all of the wires (connections are similar to molex and ribbon cables in a computer) and remove board (a few screws usually). Connect the cables to the new inverter. (If you google backlight inverter replacement, you'll find videos and text descriptions.) Note the part number on the board, including the Rev number, and order the exact one (shopjimmy.com or lcdparts.net are good starting points). Universal inverters do exist but can result in reversed controls (up to lower the brightness). Replacing individual parts on the board is cheaper but more prone to not tracking down all of the bad parts.

If the inverter is good, then it's probably backlights themselves (several in most TVs). These are sandwiched on the perimeter of the TV (usually under some tape that holds the lamp, reflector and other parts together. You need to order by length and width and get ones for your TV size. Separate the panel from the bezel. Remove the tape, and separate the reflector (make a note of how things are put together) then you have to Dremel (or use another rotary tool) to remove the plastic to get the backlight out. (They are often molded into the frame.) Then put in the new backlight and reassemble everything. See http://www.lcdparts.net/howto/default.aspx for more information but for an overview: http://www.inventgeek.com/Projects/BacklightFix/overview.aspx. Then push the new backlights into place, reconnect the wires and close up the sandwich of tape and other parts around the screen. Then replace it in the bezel.

With a good spare backlight, you can test an inverter for condition (plug together and turn on the tv while the box is open). Similarly a good inverter can test the backlight.

I hope this helps.

I would get the original remote not the sub, since the sub may not have complete functions.

Tv doesnt turn on

I had a similar problem with my 42 in Philips LCD HDTV.

Here was the problem. My Power Supply Board had several bad capacitors. I opened my TV (warranty was expired of course) and found four bulged capacitors on the PSB. Many major electronics companies Philips/Magnavox, Sony, Panasonic, and others were sold capacitors that failed in 2-5 years instead of 10-20. The capacitors fail prematurely due to a lack of preservatives. Unfortunately, they were installed in all sorts of devices and cause a wide range of failure problems.

Here are some options for you.

1. Have it fixed by a professional $$$$$$$??????? (Is it under warranty?)

Remember, TVs CONTAIN HIGH VOLTAGE AND CAN KILL YOU! Do this at your own risk.

2. Open your TV and find PSB. (The board that the power cord plugs into) Check for faulty caps. If you find some (bulged or leaking) bad caps replace the entire board. The entire board costs around $250 right now because they are in high demand right now. They can be found online. I would definitely shop around though.

3. Remove and then replace individual faulty caps. This takes some soldering skill.

Caps are inexpensive and if you can take care of it yourself it will save you hundreds.

This may be your problem. If you determine that it might be.

I have a Tip/How TO tutorial on this site that may also help. It gives step by step instructions for replacing caps on PSB #715t2432-2. If this is your board you are in luck. Here is the Link: Fixing the Philips Turns/shuts off on its own problem. I

Can you use a universal remote or do i need

Hello Jacob. Thanks for choosing Fixya! You can surely use a universal remote. That said, there are many different universal remotes in a number of price ranges. Do go to a Staples or a Walmart and talk with the technician about which remote will work best for you. Logitech Harmony is pricey but it will control all of your devices. Check it out at Best Buy or on the net at http://www.logitech.com/

I have no sound on some channels

This is likely a SOURCE issue. Your tv and it's sound would not have the ability to preclude some channels. Any bad weather where the source goes up to satellites or back down often causes issues, more commonly picture loss.

How do i get picture in picture?

As far as I know, this TV doesn't have a PIP feature. The Element Electronics web site didn't appear to list this older model. www.elementelectronics.com did provide a phone number for customer support.

http://www.retrevo.com/support/Element-FLX-3210-TVs-manual/id/4540dj094/t/2/ does have the manual online.

I hope this helps.

Not picture

First, look at the screen in darkened room to see if you can see any slight glow from the screen, if it does, then the problem can be the T-CON (not getting the 12vdc) or the main logic board not feeding the signals to the T-CON board. if not, next place to check will be the power supply module, make sure it has 24vdc which is required by the backlight inverter to work, the reason for not having 24vdc can be from bad DC filter caps (leaking/bulging top, high ESR) or short circuits in the inverter board which will cause the 24vdc supply to go into shutdown mode, so you may have to disconnect the power cable that feed the inverter board to see if the 24vdc will work without the inverter board hookup, you will need to apply about 3~4 amp of load to the 24vdc to make sure it can handle that. There are fuses on the backlight inverter boards also. So there is some troubleshooting you will have to do to find out the causes of the problem you are having. If you are going to DIY and have proper tools, electronics knowledge, and know safety precaution then please read on: Please see my basic troubleshooting guide here: http://www.fixya.com/support/r5093881-lcd_flat_panel_tv_troubleshooting_guide Failed TV and Monitors: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague Parts: www.shopjimmy.comCapacitors kit: http://lcdalternatives.auctivacommerce.com/Default.aspx he can make you a set of caps.

Screen went black smoke coming from back tv is

Smoke = overheating = big short = big failure of a part.
Unplug the tv immediately - you don't want t set your house on fire - and call a repaiman. Since the tv has been smoking then the damage will be extensive - a lot of parts, even entire boards, have been damaged. Te repair will be costly.

ldq781, I think you or electronics technician should investigate the units internal "switch-mode-power-supply/cold cathode-fluorescent lamp electronic ballast circuit(inverter) for "failed" "swollen" electrolytic filter capacitors and or "poor quality" soldering of the electronic components to the copper foil traces of the printed circuit board(power supply board) The first thing to do is visit YOUTUBE for video clips of lcd monitors being repaired for these typical types of "failures" which are most common to both types (monitors and lcd tv's) After you do your research then return here and leave additional reply if you still need help. 12fixlouie
