One radio works properly, the other can receive. I assume there are more than two by the question. Check and then rotate you batteries, mark on the working unit battery that it is GOOD. Transmit takes a great deal more power than receiving. Batteries, even un-used only last 18-24 months typically. If no joy, then check your programming but I think that is unlikely. It really sounds like a power/battery issue.

It is possible the manual is wrong where it explains channels 1-7 (GMRS/FRS). If it's been that way from the start you should check your settings and adjust the contrast if that feature is available. Your manual or a Google search will provide instructions. If that's not it your batteries could be low as that will sometimes affect the display. Also, on the off chance you are, wearing polarized sun glasses will weaken or block some displays.

both radios must be set to the same channel number. There is also a private code number that should be set to the same number on each radio.

Try swapping the known good battery out of your working unit and see if that solves the problem. If so, replace the battery pack. If this is not the problem, unfortunately your best option is to replace the one unit. Parts and schematics were never made available for this model. Best regards.

Scan mode is when you set your radio to scroll through all available channels looking for activity.

TalkAbout T5720 is a 1/2 watt radio.

I'm afraid you don't understand what this product is supposed to do. It is not designed to receive FM broadcast stations. (In fact, it does use FM modulation to carry conversations between users, but that's a technical detail you don't need to worry about.) Instead, think of it as a short-range cell phone that only works with other FRS/GMRS radios like itself. Instead of entering the ten-digit phone number of the person who has the other unit of this pair, you both need to agree on a channel number, and then just push the talk button to be heard by the other person (as long as they have their unit turned on, and are not too far away). Anyone else with a similar radio will also be able to hear your conversation, by the way. There's no privacy. But, the minutes are unlimited and you only pay for the radio once (no service plan).
