Message indicator light will not
If there were no messages, then the light would be off. A simple concept.
Messages can be left from someone dialing your number and pressing either MESSAGE or dialing 4 after the number. Call someone inside and try it.
Now, on your own phone, press MESSAGE and look at the display. It will tell you where the message came from and the 3rd soft key under the display will say CLEAR. Press it and keep doing that until you have no messages left.

On our Panasonic KX-T7633 telephone,
The first thing you need to do is press PROGRAM and the lit button. Is it really the extension of the person who is always lit? An unconnected digital port does the same thing, so you could have a misprogrammed button. To reprogram the button press PROGRAM the button and dial 1+ext number and STORE.
The other thing is that certain versions of software behave differently. We still have some verson 2's and 3's that show busy, but the 5's don't.

How do you program mobile numbers into the one
Exactly what are you programming under the button and are you putting an ACCESS CODE in the number? When you go to the intercom, try dialing "9" or whatever you use to get an outside line. If you use a special line to dial out because you're calling a mobile, then you need to dial 80x instead of 9.
Just an idea.

I am also trying to change the extension names but
Start by pressing ** and see what the display shows. If it doesn't show anything but beeps, then you have the wrong phone. Try looking for extension 101 or the first phone in the system.
When you find that phone and press program **1234, you'll go into programming. Dial 004 and press ENTER. If you press ENTER again, you'll be looking at extension 101, or you can dial an extension and be looking at a name. Now you spell out the name on the keypad using the letters and the arrow key if necessary and press ENTER (the center of the Navigator button) to store the name. Notice that the 4th time you press a 3 letter ALPHA key, you will get lower case letters. Punctuation is under the 1, * and # keys and Q appears under the 1 and 7 keys :-)
Next steps you to the next extension and you can just pick up the handset and set it back down to end programming.

I have been told by
The quick call to your Panasonic dealer would have answered your question. The 76xx series is, indeed, digital. However, it is not an IP phone, nor does it communicate down an ethernet network.
There is an IP solution to the TDx/NCP system that uses IP phones, soft phones, and a VPN or Etherenet network.
Check with your dealer.

Is there a volume adjustment for hand set on
Since a 7640 has no *handset* (it's a DSS console) that's going to be tough to do. However, since it attaches to a 763x phone, the answer is, use the Navigator volume up arrow with the handset held to your ear.
