You're in the Announce mode, where the machine plays an announcement but does not record a message. It switches to this mode automatically when memory is full. If the memory is not full, you can switch between the Announce and Answer modes by pressing the [ANSWER ON/OFF] button. You're in the Answer mode when the button lights up red.

there should be a switch at the back of the machine turn it to the middle switich and dial your # from another phone and it will ask you to enter your code or change it and or retrive your messages.

This could be internal fault. Any number on the screen 0-99 indicates number of message not yet played back. The answering machine seems to be stuck.

Have you tried to reset the memory?

Pull out the battery and then keep the answering machine aside for few minutes,say 15 minutes. Then put the battery in. This would reset the memory.If that would not help, we could try to repair the instrument.

The other option is usually replacement. It would not be worth to spend hours to get it fixed using multimeter and soldering iron. If you wish, i would be glad to proceed and help you in getting it repaired or the other option if the reset didn't work to buy an used machine :-

no you cannot retrive deleted contacts and messages. I will suggest if you want to do so in future please take a backup and then delete anything
