How can I restart my 4020 diesel after it ran out of diesel?

Crack open the line coming into the injection pump from the fuel pump (near the top of inj. pump, towards firewall). Pump the lever on fuel pump until fuel comes out of loosened line. Tighten line. Loosen at least two injector lines at injection pump head. Crank engine with starter until fuel pulses from loosened lines. Tighten lines. Crank engine again. Engine should begin firing on these cylinders first, followed by the remaining cylinders.

Replace a fanbelt on john deere 4020 diesel tractor

Most older models had the adjustment on the alternator. loosen it and push it toward the engine. remove & replace the belt. Pull the alternator away from the engine until the pulley cannot be turned by hand due to the tension. Tighten the adjustment bolt to secure it. Don't overtighten the belt.

Out of Diesel

This particular JD engine has an individual fuel pump for each cylinder. The injectors, fuel lines, and pumps are not accessible from outside of the engine. There is a hand primer pump built into the top of the fuel filter. Start by removing the rubber outlet line from the filter base and pump the primer pump until fuel come out of the filter base outlet. Ounce fuel comes out of filter reconnect the line and continue pumping by hand until the pump button feels solid, then crank engine until it starts. This works better if a helper is available to operate the starter while continuing to pump the hand primer. This is normally all that is needed after running out of fuel. If fuel does not come out of fuel filter base there may foreign material inside of primer pump. Primer pump can be disassembled and cleaned. If fuel comes out of filter, primer pump become feels solid but engine does not start the fuel control rack inside of engine may be sticking in the off position. This may sometimes be overcome by clicking the key switch from off to on rapidly. If not you may have to have your dealer remove the governor cover to free the rack.

I need to know the proper CCA rating for the

Since that tractor was made before they used CCA ratings could it be possible that no such official rating exists?

How about you use what ever size battery that will fit? If I recall correctly it takes two on each side of the tractor and they are rather long, tall and skinny - so much so that no normal battery would ever replace them physically. I'm thinking electrically just about any pickup battery would be a good CCA equivalent. Provided you are paying attention to the 12/24 volt issue on those dual battery JD setups like the 4020 had. If you have two six volt batteries and they work as one 12 volt then you can't use 12 volt batteries for your pickup, in other words.

In the real world the actual difference between a 500 CCA battery and an 800 CCA battery would be hard to tell until the temp got down around 20 below zero. THEN you might get your money's worth, and you might not. In my opinion and with my budget I won't go with a high capacity battery - they just cost too much more. I also don't live in Alaska, so I don't have to worry about it often enough to be cost effective. I get my warm fuzzy feelings from somewhere else...

If you are having troubles starting with normal rated batteries, you won't escape the same problems with higher capacity batteries. The troubles just cost more.
