Installing vari flo top mount

There is a gap at the ends; about 3/16 to 1/4" give or take. Just hand tighten them and if the valve leaks a little tighten them a little more at a time to avoid splitting the clamps by overtightening.

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

You need to replace the gasket inside the valve to stop the leak and then run the pool using just the main drain until you can get more water in. The gasket kit is pretty cheap and not to hard to replace. We can try to get you the part number if you can post the valve brand and model. You should be able to call any local pool store with the brand of filter and get the part you need without any trouble.

You would be correct; replace them with part number SX220DA and you should be all set. If the sand is older than 3 seasons, replace it too while you have to empty the filter.

How to properly vacuum my pool

attach hose to vacuum head, keep under water while you take the other hose end, and place in your pool, over the outlet, so the hose fills with water and all the air is out... then while keeping it below water level. move it into the skimmer, usually you remove the swinging door and the basket of your skimmer, and the hose fits down in. now while keeping the vacuum head under water, place your hand on the bottom to feel if you have suction. if so. you are good to go... go slowly, depending on how bad it is, you may have to go back and forth a bit, but it's not like carpet, ,,, if you go too fast, you will just stir things up.

when done, disconnect, and make sure you backwash your filter.

If you remove the six screws from the top of the dial and lift it out you will find a spider gasket in the base of the valve. This is probally your problem. If you pull this out and clean and dry the base you can spread some silicone on a new one and put back in place. Then replace the top and leave for a couple of hours and that should fix your problem.
