Intelliflow pump shuts off consistently
The Intelliflo SVRS will do this everytime. The SVRS part of the model indicates that it has a Safety Vacuum Release System integrated into the pump. This means that whenever the pump senses a change in the vacuum pressure (when you connect your barracuda this happens) the SVRS kicks in and shuts the pump down.
If you want to avoid this, you either need to disable the SVRS in the intelliflo menu, Or simply push the "quick clean" button and it will run constantly with no SVRS for 1 hour.
Below is the link for the manual on this pump, this will tell you how to disable the SVRS function if the 1 hour quick clean is not sufficient time to clean your pool

How can I get to the impeller to see if it's clogged?
Depending what type of pump you have you can use your finger with the system off and see if you can loosen the clog, if not then you have to take the motor off of the pump to access the impeller, if that is the case you may want to call a professional.

Display not readable during cold temperatures
yes the display is LCD these tend to turn all black or all silver when it gets cold , what ive done to mine is install a small foam cooler from grocery store that i cut bottom out of over the panel in cool weather Only! and use the heat generated from a simple drop light plugged in to outlet by pump with a 100 watt incandesent bulb in it , that makes the display work ok for an extended season
