REPAIRING DIGITAL DISPLAY SCALE -- SALTER BRAND WITH ERROR MESSAGE, AND EVENTUALLY NO DISPLAY AT ALL---I managed to fix a Salter digital display bathroom scale I had bought for my mom by removing dust from the area that turns it on -- the design fit perfectly with her decor so she didn`t want it replaced with a different style. MODEL: It was model 910 but I imagine the fix will work with other similar models. PROBLEM: The scale had been working only occasionally for many weeks and was hard to turn on -- my mom said it no longer made the little click sound when she pressed it with her foot to turn it on. Finally it gave an error display and stopped working entirely with no display at all -- not even the dashes to indicate it was getting any power from the battery. SOLUTION: When changing the battery and cleaning out its compartment failed, I suspected that maybe dust had gotten into another area -- the part that turns it on -- on this scale they`re little silver discs under the glass that press into the base (the dust would explain the lack of the usual metallic click sound and the lack of contact to switch it on). The area is not very accessible, so I used a high power vacuum with crevice attachment in my left hand, while loosening the dust with a duster/paintbrush in my right. The trick was to find the right duster and then work both tools around each disc coming at the same point from different angles. The first time I used a small duster with man-made materials (not feathers) and tried to push it into the crevice so that at least some bristles turned the corner down into the base -- the vacuum was strong enough to pull any loose dust out. This first cleaning went well enough to get the display back on when I tried it -- back to the error message anyway, but I knew I was on the right track. The second time I used a skinny fine detail number 1 paint brush (similar to the ones in a child`s paint set) to loosen the dirt while using the vacuum -- I pushed horizontally in toward the disc, and then twirled it back and forth so that the bristles splayed and the lower half of them curved down into the crevice. This worked well and afterwards the scale turned on and went to 00 and read my weight. A third cleaning with the vacuum and paint brush even brought back the little "click" sound and my mom says that since fixing it the scale works better now than it has in a couple years. Try changing the battery.

If the display is showing "partial digits" on the display, it means a scale is excessively shaken (sometimes during shipping) it's possible for the LCD to become partially separated from the PCB (Printed Circuit Board). On many models you can gently press on the LCD and it will reconnect. However on many scales it's difficult to reach the LCD (without removing the cover) and thus the scale will often have to be returned to the manufacturer for repair.
