On a TV remote if you apply too much pressure then you break the 'latch' on the battery's door, as we all know it is about applying pressure it the right place of the 'spring'. Once I got the correct placement of the flat head screw driver it was easy, but it took me 30 minutes to figure that out and I broke a piece of the towel rack.

Pressure could be low at the source

Sounds like your cartridge is not properly seated and also may not be aligned properly. Remove it and apply a thin coating of plumbers grease to the cartridge and then work it back into it's position rotating back and forth to insure it is going down all the way.

Not easy but drill it out .
