If you removed the gas valve and associated pipes, it takes a long time for the gas to bleed through and get from the gas line to the pilot light and that is needed to heat the thermocouple and allow the gas valve to open. It should also be mentioned that all work on Gas appliances should be undertaken by a qualified and registered gas technician.

Jennifer, the instructions posted by Rheems on the heater are wrong. You must first rotate the dial clockwise, use force (in our our case) to get the pilot to its position. The folks at Rheems are nuts not to check their instructions before printing them and plastering them on their hot water tanks. Disgraceful, period.

if leaking from tank, replace it. If leaking around fittings have them repaired. Personally since it is a small unit I would replace it and not look back.

follow the gas line into unit remove front panel or panel closest look for small silver tube going to burner should be close to it

On my NPE-210S you need to switch dipswitch #4 to the "on" position, or up on mine. Dip switches are found behind the main panel on the control board. you'll have to also open up the plastic case housing the control board. 4 screws for the main panel and 4 screws for the control board housing.
