Kirby Generation 3 Bagged Upright Vacuum - Page 6 Questions & Answers
How to install a belt on a kirby generation 3
Hello. I can assist you. let me begin by stating that it is important to buy a genuine Kirby belt. Now, even though this is actually easy to do it is a wee bit complicated to explain. Therefore, I will explain and also give you the link to a series of photos with explanation on how to do this job.
With the Kirby in an upright position push the toe-touch lever all the way to the floor to raise the Kirby as high as it will go. Expose the nozzle on the Kirby by lifting the headlight cap. Release the belt tension by using the L-shaped handle on the belt lifter turning it all the way to the left (counter-clockwise) until the red arrows line up. Unlock the lever lock at the top of the nozzle and remove the nozzle from the unit. Unlock the rug plate by unhooking the two latches on the rear of the nozzle and remove it from the nozzle. Note the brush roll setting, which is indicated by a number or a series of notches. (See the next question for more information on the brush roll setting.) Turn the belt lifter to the right (clockwise) until the green arrows line up to release the belt from the belt lifter hook. Lift out the brushroll. Slide the old belt off and replace with a new belt. Replace the brushroll making sure each end is on the same setting. Replace the rug plate and making sure that the new belt is in the center of the brushroll, turn the belt lifter to the left (counter-clockwise) until the red arrows line up. (it will be hard to turn, as it is a new belt that you are stretching) Re-attach the nozzle to the Kirby locking it into place. Once it is locked onto the Kirby, turn the belt lifter to the right (clockwise) until the green arrows line up. This will release the belt off the hook and onto the motor shaft.

Sadly it most likely will break. However, a temporary solution is not only easy and workable the down side is it's not that pretty. Just take a standard 3 foot wooden dowel (any hardware store) 1/4 inch in diameter and some duct tape. Put the dowel parallel to the handle and wrap the duct tape around both the handle and the dowel from top to bottom.
This has extended the life of ORECK's notoriously weak handles for years. Hope it helps.

Make sure cord is not damaged. Check to see nothing is blocking hose or carpet nozzle(where beater brush is or brush roll). Plug unit in to a receptacle that you know has power going to it. (Lamp you know works when plugged into same. Using hose on front, make sure bag bottom completely attached to exhaust, the hose has a little arm like thing that will depress the safety switch on the front of the unit, and turn on using foot switch at the back of the unit. If these do not work, it could be one of two safety switches, dirt may have fouled or switch may need to be replaced. Authorized Kirby Dealer in your area: Replacement parts, Kirby Distributor, call:

First remove the back, then remove the handle assembly. Then pop off the plastic switch cover and it has one screw on the back you will need to take out, then there are two screws in the front of the body housing and two on the back that you will need to take out and then you are ready to take the top cover off and get into the motor area.

I don't know where near you, but most local repair shops should have the belts for kirby.
My button for the neutral and drive won't work.
Find an authorized Kirby Dealer in your area and have the part professionally installed. Very complex. Many parts and screws. If no Kirby store, find a Vac store you trust. Or go here http://reviews.ebay.com/REPLACING-OR-REPAIRING-KIRBY-VACUUM-NEUTRAL-DRIVE-PEDAL_W0QQugidZ10000000011180003
