Your Transmission fork has becime disconnected. You need to pull the transmission and make sure that it is installed correctly, Check the following and pay attention to picture number 17. I had the exact same problem which occurred because I dropped the Kirby hard after lugging it down the stairs, it is a very easy fix and I am a banker, not a repair guy. I would say that it is definitely running backwards. I have a guide to replacing the power switch that outlines the reassembly of the Kirby and tells you which carbon brush wire plugs into which hole on the power switch. Each carbon brush has a letter (B or O) and the same two letters are on the switch to help you get the wires back on right. (the "B" attaches to the "B" and the "O" attaches to the "O") Here is the link to the guide and I hope it helps,...

If it is very loud, you probably have a broken motor fan. Remove the carpet nozzle from the front and examine the fan for damage.
