FRIST O FALL CHECK TO SEE IF THERE IS A SHUT OFF VAULVE UNDER THE GAS TANK SEE IF THIS IS OPEN ALSO HOW OLD IS THE GAS , DONT LEAVE GAS IN THE GAS TANK THE GAS TODAY DOES NOT HAVE BUT A MONTH OF SHELF LIFE. YOU MAY HAVE TO PULL THE CARB DOWN AND CLEAN THE BOWL AND THE JETS IN THE CARB ALSO START BY PUTTING FRESH GAS IN THE TANK

First you need to identify, is there a spark at the plugs? Is there fuel getting the cylinders, it can be so many things until you define at least that, the solutions are too many to list

Throttle advance issue, Check the carb.

There are 3 things that can cause no power at the outlets.
1. Brushes are worn (remove the end bell and the brush block. Inspect the brushes for uneven wear.
2. The AVR has failed. This is a very simple regulator consisting of 1 capacitor and a diode. Inspect the cap and diode for any obvious signs of damage. Most of the time the capacitor bulges or burns out.
3. The armature commutator is very dirty. Clean off with sand paper by rotating the engine with the spark plug removed holding the sand paper in one place until the armature commutator is a shiny copper color.

4...... There is a possibility fo wiring damage or stator winding damage but.... unless you were operating the unit under a heavy load for a long time.... I doubt the stator has failed.


I think your going to find either a bad set of brushes or a problem with the AVR. Most of the time the AVR can be repaired by just changing the capacitor.

Why don't you keep it open?

There should be a "full wave bridge" which consists of three diodes that converts DC to AC. Try your local alternator shop before taking it in to a certified repair center.

Go online to Generac and they have parts list and owners manuals online. They will ship you parts.

James, Which unit are you dealing with 12k 15k 17k 20k 22k 24k? You have a ats. automatic transfer switch?

That is a full home back-up unit. You need dealer support. Contact them direct. There is nothing online about re-flashing.

Have somone hold the start button while you measure the voltage across the battery. If it is less than 11 volts, then the battery is bad.

Check the wiring from the utility through to the autostart control.; make sure all connections are solid and the wire itself is in good condition. New wire is no guarantee, several times I've had wire with a break somewhere in the reel. A non-contact voltage detector may helpful; start at the controller end, go to the other end of the wire, and see where you lose the voltage detect. It will detect voltage up to the break if you can keep the detector close enough to the wire.
