take 2 foot of 1/4 fuel line or 5/16 fuel line. screw it into the spark plug hole. if not fit bevel end with grinder or knife. BLOW while slowly turning engine. should come out intake, then exhaust then during compression and power stroke no valves open. If leaks out a valve tap the top of the valve with a screw driver during top dead center power thru the spark plug hole to seat it. if it leaks out the crank case you have bad piston/cylinder rings.

You may have an intake valve staying open or the spark timing may be off from a slipped flywheel and key. Can spray liguid wrench in the intake to coat valve stem . You would have to take off the flywheel hold down nut and pull starter engage ring to see if the groove in the flywheel matches the groove in the crankshaft. Ive had blowers, weed eaters, tillers and all kinds of small engines break a flywheel key for no apparent reason. Sometimes they are just a little loose and wear out or snap.

I would replace the sparkplug making sure it is gapped properly and put a new air filter on the engine.

sounds like gasket below carb is leaking (similar to vac leak)

make sure your spark plug and air filter are clean. typically when this happens the spark plug isn't firing correctly.

The fuel in the crank case is caused by bad rings or scratched/worn piston walls it the only way fuel can reach the crankcase unless you pour it in to the oil fill. The fix is to overhaul the engine. Thanks for using FixYa. Have a nice day. Jeff

First, loosen the arm until it is moving freely. Next, open the throttle to full capacity while making a note of which direction the arm moves in when the throttle moves through it. The fuel flow solenoid or needle valve it controls may be bad/need adjusted/need cleaning. If your engine has one, it is on the bottom of the fuel bowl on the carburetor. It will have a wire running to it, and when you turn on the key, it will make a tiny "click". If you take it off and remove the fuel bowl. and clean it, then put it back on, it may solve your problem.

I am not aware of a method to do that. There are springs and valve guides etc that cannot be accessed without taking the upper engine apart.

I had a similar problem with my generator which also has a B/S engine. Found this on you tube which worked very well for me. Hope it does for you. It also cleans the carb at the same time.
